Amritsar is most Sacred city for Sikhs.
It is important city near Pakistan Border Entry Point known as Wagah Border & Atari Border.

Location of Amritsar :
https://maps.google.co.in/maps?q=amritsar+city&client=opera&oe=UTF-8&hnear=Amritsar,+Punjab&gl=in&t=h&z=12

But most of people from all walks of life irrespective of Region, Religion, etc.
want to go to Golden Temple at Amritsar.
Amritsar is a must have destination in mind when someone comes from other parts of India.
Internationally also Amritsar is well known destination.
Main attraction is Golden Temple.
But there are many other attractions after a person visits Golden Temple or
other Gurdwaras in and around Amritsar.
Some of these are Famous Food, Papad Badi, Shoes- Punjabi Jutti,
Metal Art Work, Clothes etc.

There are many Tourist Attractions also.
Major Tourist Attractions:
* Golden Temple / Darbar Sahib / Harmandir Sahib.
(4 km from Amritsar Junction or Bus Stand on Full Traffic - Rush Roads in day)
*Jallianwala Bagh (100 Metres from Golden Temple)
*Wagah Border (30-35 km from Golden Temple)
*Maraja Ranjit Singh Garden / Rambagh Garden / Company Bagh ( 1km from Front side of Amritsar Junction Railway Station)
*Durgiana Temple / Durgiana Mandir (Behind Amritsar Junction Railway Station, Half KM only)
*Gobind Garh Fort (Behind Amritsar Junction Railway Station, Half KM only)
(Durgiana Temple, Gobind Garh Fort & Back side of Amritsar Junction Railway Station are opposite to each other) check map.

Most of these can be covered in 1 day.
2 days 5-6 places can be covered.
In 3 days you can taste food at different places also.
3rd day can be spared for nearby city Gurdwaras, if interested for first half day.
To cover in almost all places mentioned here, you need 3 days minimum.

----------------------------- ----------------------------- -----------------------------

GOLDEN TEMPLE / DARBAR SAHIB / HARMANDIR SAHIB:
GOLDEN TEMPLE is locally called as Darbar Sahib.
Harmandir Sahib is real name.

Though in every city in Punjab,
Mmain Gurdwara is called Darbar Sahib.
Don't get Confused, when you hear this.

Darshan at Golden Temple, is very very tricky on Holidays it may take 2 hours or more to enter in day time with long queues.

Morning Time:
On Non-Holidays best time in morning is 5am-6.45am. it takes around 30-45 minutes.

In Winters at 6.45 am you can see direct into the Golden Temple from Entry gate of main Gurdwara.
Because Direct TV Telecast is Just OVER then (PTC Punjabi).
Evening also, there is Direct TV Telecast 5-7pm(PTC Punjabi).

6.45-7am is CLEAN SWEEP ENTRY, as saw on 12 DEC 2011.

In Day Entry for Darshan time is 1-2 hours or more, depends on Holiday and Peak Tourist Season.

It is best to spend time of Evening at Wagah Border and Markets.
You can comeback in evening at Golden Temple Premises to enjoy lighting and calmness etc.
& Langar (Community Kitchen) if you like.

You can take a dip in sarovar... be prepared accordingly... We did in spine chilling winters...

After finishing your day, move in to Parikrama (Premises) around Sarovar (Water Pool) is best at night.

Peace.....Peace.......... Peace...................

According to Ankur003:
"Try to visit Temple after dark... With lights on... the Temple has a grace of its own...
You can take a dip in sarovar... be prepared accordingly... We did in spine chilling winters... "

There are many Gurdwaras in Amritsar, if anybody wants to see.

At morning around 8am Vans / Scorpio etc. (from Langar Hall side) take for near by
City Gurdwaras, like Taran Taran (Largest Sarovar- 800mtr 1 side x 4 sides), Goindwal - Baoli sahib etc.
They charge nominal per person.
As the roads are not so good at stretches Scorpio or big vehicle is best.
They know the routes also.
They take time around approx. 8am-3pm tour.
Booking starts around 6.30am outside gate of Langar Hall side.
Though Free Bus Service is also there but not much seats are left and travel by Bus is not so good.
You can ask for extra sight seeing (Wagah Border) ride also.
Hope this will help a little.

My inputs...
Try to visit Temple after dark... With lights on... the Temple has a grace of its own...
You can take a dip in sarovar... be prepared accordingly... We did in spine chilling winters... :)
If you want to see closing ceremony in Wagah Border... try to reach atleast 2-3 hours before the scheduled time... else you may not be able to reach even the entrace forget about getting a seat... Wagah border becomes crowded and is full of tourist buses...

It all depends on how you manage to get ready in morning to explore all this.
Remember 1 hr to get fresh. Have Langar with Tea and spend around 1or 2 hrs at Golden Temple.
Then Jaliawala Bagh 1hr.
After Jallianwala Bagh take Lassi and pack or eat at Kulwants Kulche for afternoon.
Then Durgiana Temple and Fort 1-2 hrs
Then Company Bagh 1hr.
Leave for Wagah Border in early hrs at 2pm last.
How much time will you get for these Fort and Company Bagh.
Goto Company Bagh if Sun is out till late evening then goto Durgiana Temple.
You have to adjust fort in daytime only.
Around 8pm you can come to Golden Temple. Spend half an hour or one hour according to your like.
Then goto Bhrawan da Dhaba via market.
Leave for Lassi in Market and Station.
Late hrs there is no waiting at Brother's Djaba.
There are other Brothers Dhaba opp Jallianwala Bagh.
He is also good.

All Places in this Map except Wagah Border:
Rambagh ,Durgiana Temple / Durgiana Mandir ,Gobind Garh Fort.

That's a one stop point for all Amritsar queries.

Great Work Satinder Jee.

Amritsar is one of the top most destinations in my travelling list. But I am always confused about the best time to visit Amritsar.

In winters , they say It is very Cold, colder even than delhi.

In summers , they say it is as hot as a tandoor.

Holidays are just at those times. Also time when the crowd is least , is a rare sight as told to me by some friends.

March April and Sep-Nov is fine to see it. It can be easily done in 2 days.Take a early morning train direct to Amritsar and come back Sunday evening.

I went there about 5 years back.
