Are touchscreen mobile fones sturdy enough for long rides (not drives) ?

Do they require extra care in high altitudes, low tempratures, rough terrain or you can just put them in your jeans pocket like traditional ones and forget them while riding?

Most touch screens of today are built keeping in mind that they will be used just like other non touch phones. But at the end of the day they are more sensitive and prone to failure if you drop it or something like that.

If you are too worried about a touch only interface you can go for a touch and type kind of phone.

Get a E63 or E72, no touchscreen, but pretty much everything you will need.

My HTC touch screen didn't last six months, in my pocket. They're great, they do everything, but...lot of reports of problems.

all those are really sturdy phones. what do you need it for? should handle high Alt, sub zero temp, not sure how to relate from rough terrain, they will not be able to stand too much dust or water.

So if you want to mount them on bike while driving, not a very good idea

All mobile phones including touch screen phones are drop tested, thermally tested below minus and above 40 degrees. they are all rugged and seldom gives problems. I am using HTC P3300 for nearly 3 years now, had dropped several times. Body is scraped , but touch screen intact. Been at extreme temps like 45 degrees and minus 5 degrees. No issues so far.

You can go for touch screen with no hesitation

I've been using a HTC Touch Pro for about 4 months now, and believe me I really use my phones pretty roughly. The touch screen has been holding up pretty well till now, I've even dropped it twice from height of about 3-4 feet!

I think HTC has got stornger build. I had HTC3300 and was very happy with it before I lost it.

My Asus 552W is a useless phone, low battery life, very shaky build etc. I bought it for faster processor, which is a plus

and on top of that, Touch has misaligned just a week after the warranty expired and heck local guy asking for 2500 Rs for new Touch Screen module.

But still I can not live without WM phone

My iPhone is working fine even after 1.5 yrs of abuse. It has fallen in the sands of Rajasthan and on the riverbed of the Spiti ! Moreover it has been abused like anything and fallen many times on hard ground.

No problems whatsoever. It really depends on the phone manufacturer.
