Short review on Palakkad-Chennai trip on May 2nd.
Bus : KPN travels EKM-CHN non AC 2x2 semisleeper
Time of departure : 8pm (8:40 pm actual). Agency is KPN travels office near Bhima jewellers, near KSRTC bus stand, Palakkad.
Time of arrival : 7am Koyambedu (scheduled arrival 5:30 am).

Overall the trip was good and the bus was good. Had just 32 seats in a 12m bus. So got plenty of leg space and the seats were of the old Haritha make very comfortable.
There were no breaks and the speed was quite good max 80km/hr.

So the bus : 4/5
Staff : 4/5
Timings : 3/5.

At 700rs, a nice mode of travel..

What's the distance between Palakkad and Chennai?

32 seats coverts to good leg space. Even 36 seats bus has good leg space compared to Volvo. But ypu get best leg space for 1+1+1 seating.

Was the bus a Ashok Leyland 12M?

Palakkad to Chennai is around 570km via Salem, Krishnagiri.

32 seats in a 12M is a real luxury seating. ARC and ABTX Travels have 36 seater AshLey 12M AC buses, which offer better leg space than Volvos. I think KPN's bus was a Viking, as 12M can take 4 more seats without affecting the leg space

SVR Travels is introduced NON AC semisleeper and sleeper services from Bangalore to Vizag, hyderabad, Vijayawada, Raichur. Yesterday when I went to marathahalli i found 4 new yet to be registered buses Non AC in their garage. I buses are built by Rayal Engineering Company, a bus body building from Karur. Till now I have seen some omni buses in blore city built by them. This is first time i am seeing inter city bus operator like SVR Travels opt for them. Till now we saw prakash and veera to design nice coaches now rayal has also done a good job indeed a new competitor.

The second bus is APSRTC hitech from kadapa registered in kadapa RTO. So APSRTC has now started to register with respective districts in series Z from the earlier trend of only Hyderbad.

The Third and fourth are KSRTC non Ac 2+1 sleeper built on tata chasis and they look like CORONA. coach builder is unknown as i coudnt see the label on the bus. KSRTC does great job is making coaches look exactly like the established players.

Bangalore to Vizag!. Since the road is good, it would take no more than 19 hours. These should be Ashok Leyland 12M 225 hp buses. How much SVR charging? And is SVR running Bangalore - Raichur service?

Though Rayal is small bus body builder, they did a good job as you said. And the design looks exactly like Prakash or Veera built buses. But why don't these small builders try new designs?

Yeah, bus is looking like Corona sleeper!

Why do private bus operators use Ashok Leyland chassis more than TATA chassis?

SVR is charging Rs950 for Non AC and i think they take 19-20hrs to reach vizag as Volvo is taking 17-18hrs now due to road works in ongole-Vja sector. and continous truck traffic between vja-eluru and TNK-Rajamundry and also city traffic in vizag for 30km from steel plant. in south AL is the prefferred chasis for bus be it a RTC or private operator.

Svr is operating Bangalore - Raichur service with 2+1 Sleeper and also Non AC. they also operate Kakinada to Gangavati via Hyd, Raichur.

KSRTC sleeper is built in house by their regional bus bodying workshops (like apsrtc has at miyapur) the quality is quite good but their designs are clones of either volvo or corona .
The private operators using AL because of the ALs versatile 12 m platform its an awesome platform and tata doesnot have 225 bhp engine on offer in cowl chassis form , earlier their used to be a belief that AL chassis was rugged but tata has come along way ,Tata is focussing more on fully built segment where AL is considerable lagging . The neptune engines from AL are quite smooth . Tata is extensively testing their multiaxle bus chassis and started selling fully built city buses (hybrid) in spain. If tata comes up with the multiaxle chassis in India before AL you can see a considerable shift from AL to tata from private operators.
Nothing like only south indian RTCs use Al, RSRTC , GSRTC , MSRTC,PRTC,JKSRTC, himachal roadways , upsrtc all use AL buses in considerable nos.

I guess its 12m or maybe less. While the bus was parked, just compared it with a KeSRTC Express bus , which is 12m and both came approx the same.

The bus was a white colored one with a blue line. The seats were of Haritha make (the old type) and hence comfortable and the leg support was also good. I guess even the last row seats were fully reclining...
