Reclaimed and Recycled
I have been backing up my photos on smugmug since 2006-2007 time frame.
FOR JPEG, I would say, for the price (45$ or so for basic account/year), its an excellent deal. The company listens to customers, and we get new features as needed. though primarily a "pro shop", even basic accounts are very good.
However, there are limitations.
There are no RAW backups.
FOR RAW backup, I do use external HDDs, but they can fail.
So what to do?
There are numerous services which give you RAW backup, but one service which is overlooked is Amazon Prime
At about 80$/year you get unlimited RAW storage.
Not all cameras are recognized, so you may need to run a DNG conversion in case your camera is not recognized, but most canon nikon and Sony raw files are fine.
DNG conversion also makes sense in another way. Its an open format.
So 10 years from now DNG will always work, even if your fav company has gone out of business.
