A quick trip from banaglore to land of chola's - Thanjavur (Tamil Nadu).
Although we had extensively travelled across southern states of India, there was always one place pending on our visiting list - Thanjavur or Tanjore.
During this independance day holidays, we planned for Thanjavur for two reasons, one being that it was been long pending on our getaway list, and second, owing to the fact,it was a long weekend, it was difficult to get accomodation elsewhere.
Our plan was to visit the following heritage places (collectively known as "Great Living Chola Temples"), however we couldn't make it to the 3rd one, time constraints.
1. Brihadeeshwara temple (Big Temple)
2. Airavateshwara temple
3. GangaiKondacholisavaram temple
Drive Route
Bangalore - krishnagiri - salem - Namakkal - Trichy - Thanjavur - (Time 8 hours - Distance 440kms approx)
Bangalore - Salem - Namakkal - Toll road
Namakkal - Trichy (SH 25) - Single lane (Good condition. Sand truck traffic is annoying)
Trichy - Thanjavur (NH67) - Toll road
Accomadation
Hotel Star Residency - Good. Recommended.

Look at the artist on the right, how comfortably she lifts her leg, and manages to smile along with it. Hats off!
An evening shot of big temple. I wasn't carrying a tripod, so placed the camera on a side wall, and tried to compose whatever possible could be achieved from that angle.

Maha Nandi facing Lord shiva
Chola's build this lake around 1000 years ago, but presently in sad state of affairs.
Airvateshwara Temple at Darasuram (near kumbakonam - 40kms from Thanjavur).
It rained heavenly the previous night, and these ruins identified as UNESCO world heritage site's are really in ruins. Feels miserable.
Royal Museum at Thanjavur has collection of art and handicrafts as old as from 1000 to 1100 years ago.
