It is easily affordable !
Amritsar is not a metro city.

But rush there is more as you enjoy traffic in Kolkata !
It is one way for old city going near Golden Temple.

Kesar dal is very hot and yummy and lots of butter. I got thali last time. too good. But you can only eat it once a year. I ate it 4 years ago and I still remember it.

There are many hotels.
it all depends on when you reach.
Where you want to stay.
If you will stay near parking of Golden Temple, then it will be good as you can move there on foot at time of rush in evening.
If you stay on Main Highway then just take rickshaw for old city.
You can go on car to Wagah Border if you stay on main road / highway.
Hotels at Min Road / Highway may have own parking which is difficult to get in old city area.
Movement in old city area is one way only near Golden Temple & towards Railway Station.

If you do not have own car then best will be to stay nearby Golden Temple as you can get all types of facilities like transport, food, night walk etc easily.
Just read my log and you will get idea for stay. Ask lodging question there as this is food thread only or make your own thread for itinerary.

Your safest bet will be to stay in the Dharamshalas maintained by Sri Harimandir Sahib authorities.

If for any reason, you won't get any rooms here, worry not, there are plenty of budget hotels around Golden Temple only.

I stayed at Hotel Robin (booked through Booking.com) and it was a OK type of property. The best thing about the place - Its barely 2 mins walk to Jaliawala Bagh and 5 mins to Sri Harmandir Sahib.
