Hello to all BCMT friends…!!

I can never repay back what I have got from BCMTouring.com.
I get all type of help and advice....from planning my trips, itinerary to cooking wonderful Amritsari fish.
Thanks to the members of this wonderful community.
.
I learnt many things from a discussion on Facebook page of BCMTouring. When I was seeking help for finding a bike to do Manali - Leh circuit
https://www.facebook.com/groups/19646833128/permalink/10152492835983129/
thanks to Sameer Vaidya person who gave maximum suggestions.
Special mention Dhillon Sir dsd , Punit Gupta, Sanchit Tittal, Santosh Lekhak, Dhairya Gupta, Rahul Singh, Om Vaikul

The search is still on ….!!
Sharing what I got out of this discussion…!!

Brands
Trek – most famous
Firefox
Scott
Rockrider ( value for money )
Suncross
Montra (Indian brand)
BSA Hercules (Indian brand )

Price
start from Rs.9500 to and can go upto lacs

Hardtail
What I understood is that for this route rear suspension is not a good option.
Front suspension should have lock to save energy in uphill ride.

Gear
should be easy to manipulate
(shimano gears very common and good )

How to choose Size
when one stand with feet down on road…. There should be atleast 1.5 to 2 inch space between our jewel and horizontal frame of cycle.

Other important points
1. the FRAME of bike should be very tough to take impact of the bad roads
But should be light so that less energy is wasted in case one has to push the bike at some point of time.
2. Breaks with rubber pads are not useful in this route as they stop working in rain and slush.

I would like the members to give their suggestions so that people like me who have very little knowledge on this topic can benefit from it…!!

polly

never ever give up
Infact best combo is one v brake, and one disc.
Infact v brakes lock a bit better in rains and squeak a bit less

As you have already done research could you?

1) Please explain the technicalities like lockup of suspension etc for novice members like me.
2) Put specific models and brands with their prices you have gone through.
3) Tool kits etc required to carry while long tour.

Hi, Buddy TIMAP

I am also a novice like you but will try to answer based on my research.

1) Please explain the technicalities like lockup of suspension

Ans; When one is ascending the front suspension lock helps in saving energy.

Rear suspension is useless as it drains lot of energy .. so a bike with no rear suspension (HARDTAIL ) is good for this route.

2. Put specific models and brands with their prices you have gone through.
Ans.
Best brand as per my research was Trek
the basic model is 3500 which is around 30k and then the prices go up further
link for price
FirefoxBikes >> Trek >> Trek >> 3500 (MY 2014)
problem with 3500 is that it has rubber pad breaks.. which do not work in slush and water.

Other brand basic bikes
rockrider, firefox starts from 9500/- but they are not very famous among people doing this route.

3. Tool kits etc required to carry while long tour.
ans. I am still to reach on that topic will update you as soon as I buy a bike for myself and start preparing for the trip.
