Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company, has always been at the forefront of propagating energy conservation and efficiency in the country. In continuation of these efforts and on the occasion of World Environment Day, Tata Power as part of its Demand Side Management (DSM) initiatives, has launched super-efficient ceiling fan program for its residential consumers in Mumbai.
The program has been rolled out by Tata Power in partnership with "Atomberg Technologies", an award-winning start-up launched by the alumni of IIT-Mumbai.
The objective of the program is to encourage the residential consumers to adopt highly energy efficient ceiling fan solutions, thereby saving electricity. The ceiling fans named ‘Gorilla' are based on the Brushless DC (BLDC) technology that are more energy efficient than five-star ceiling fans available in the market, consuming just 28 Watts at the highest speed. These fans come with a smart remote control, which has speed control, sleep and timer mode. Under this program, each residential consumer is eligible to procure 4 ceiling fans at a price of Rs. 1750 each, against a market price of Rs. 3500/- each.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Ashok Sethi, COO and Executive Director, Tata Power, said, "Energy management and conservation are more important today than ever before and innovative technologies like the BLDC technology can be a game changer for it. Ceiling fans are one of the most important but often underrated appliances when we think of energy efficiency in homes. This program is in continuation of our efforts to promote end-use energy efficiency by offering the cutting-edge solutions at a highly discounted rate. Such initiatives reiterate our commitment towards energy efficiency and demand side management, both of which are vital to Tata Power's commitment to ‘Sustainability'.”
The products will be home delivered to the consumers who register for the program. The consumers would also get an exclusive three-year warranty on these Ceiling Fans. To avail to the scheme, consumers can register themselves online at "BE GREEN" on the Tata Power website or at 24X7 call center.
Tata Power's DSM Programs are gaining wide spread momentum, more so due to its tremendous potential to save energy costs to the consumer. In last few years, Tata Power has launched diverse DSM programs which include appliance exchange, load shift and energy audits. Consumers of Tata Power in Mumbai can purchase energy efficient fans at a discounted rate. The scheme, launched on World Environment Day on 05 June 2017. The ceiling fans are named "Gorilla" and are based on the Brushless DC (BLDC) technology, and consume on 28 watts at the highest speeds. According to Tata Power, the fans are more energy efficient than five star ceiling fans available in the market. The fans are from Atomberg, an Indian startup specialising in energy efficient ceiling fans.





Ashok Sethi, COO and executive director, Tata Power, said "Energy management and conservation are more important today than ever before, and innovative technologies, like the BLDC technology, can be a game changer for it. The market price of the fans are Rs 3,500 each, but Tata Power consumers can by the fans for Rs 1,750 each. Each consumer can purchase up to four ceiling fans through the scheme. The fans come with a smart remote control, which can be used to adjust the speeds, toggle the sleep mode, and set a timer. The fans will be delivered to the homes of consumers availing the offer. Interested buyers can register for the product on the Be Green subsite.

(TPDDL), the private power distributor in the national capital, announced it has launched super-efficient “Gorilla” ceiling fans at a 40 per cent price discount for consumers.

The company said the country’s most energy-efficient fans use a super-efficient Brushless DC (BLDC) motor to deliver 63 per cent more efficiency than non-star rated fans. The fans have been designed by Atomberg Technologies, a start-up by the alumni of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai.

The motor of the fans consumes only 28 Watt power as compared to 75 Watt consumed in a non-star rated fan. TPDDL claimed the Gorilla fans do not produce any humming noise and do not heat on operation and also come with a smart remote with sleep mode and timer mode.
“We at Tata Power-DDL have always been front-runners in adopting and promoting energy efficient solutions among our consumers. The launch of the super-efficient BLDC fans is another step in the same and will result in substantial saving of energy. I believe our customers will avail this scheme in large numbers,” said Praveer Sinha, TPDDL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD).
TPDDL is offering two modes for purchase of the fans. Consumers can visit nearby TPDDL customer care centre with latest electricity bill or any authorised identity proof. They can also buy the fans online through the TPDDL website. The fan is priced at Rs 2,200 per unit when purchases offline. For online purchase, the fan is priced at Rs 2,300 per unit. The fans are available in 3 colour options and carry 3 year on-site warranty.

Tata Power, which supplies power to much of Mumbai, is offering a 50% subsidy to its customers who want to buy a BLDC or ultra-low power fan.
Instead of Rs 3,500 per unit, customers will be able to get four units of the fan at Rs 1,750 each, making the remote-controlled ‘smart fans’ cheaper than many conventional competitors.
BLDC refers to ‘brushless direct current’ and is the name a new technology that uses high-quality and high-power permanent magnets instead of copper windings to generate part of the rotating power of the fan.
Typically, the rotation power of the fan is generated by creating opposing magnetic force between a magnet at the center and a surrounding coil, which also works as a magnet when power is passed through it.
In case of BLDC fans, only the core magnet is created by electric current. The surrounding part, which is what is the part that rotates, is created using permanent (regular) magnets which do not require electricity.
As a result, these fans consume between 10-32 watts, depending on the speed. Most fans available in the market consume between 60-80 watts at full speed.
The fan that is being distributed by Tata Power consumes only 28 watts and is made by Atomberg, a start-up created by alumni of IIT Bombay.
Like other BLDC fans such as the one from Surya, ‘Gorilla Fan’ too promises air delivery of 220 cubic meter per minute. This is comparable to the performance of a 75-watt model like Havells Velocity, which delivers 230 CMM.
Also like other BLDC offerings, the fan comes with a remote controller with speed control, sleep and timer functions. Sleep functions reduces the speed of the fan over time.
Atomberg’s fans have already won awards at the Global Cleantech Innovation Program at San Francisco organized by United Nations Industrial Development Organization.
The start-up, which commenced manufacturing in late 2015, claims to be selling 12,000 fans per month, including 2,000 via e-commerce websites like Amazon and Flipkart. On these websites, the fans continue to be rated highly by the consumers even as sales pick up.
The company said the subsidy by Tata Power is part of the power utility’s Demand-Side Management (DSM) program to improve energy efficiency. Atomberg said it has sold more than 7,000 fans through the program in Mumbai. The products are home delivered to the consumers who register for the program.
Atomberg said it has also tied-up with Reliance Power too to distribute its fans, though it didn’t specify the price for Reliance customers.
