Jio and UNISOC (Spreadtrum) in Talks With Lava and Micromax to Launch Affordable 4G Smartphones in India

Reliance JioPhone and also the JioPhone 2 have gained wide popularity and success among the masses because of their budget-friendly prices. Both these JioPhones are powered by UNISOC chipsets, the Chinese smartphone chipset maker which is formerly known as Spreadtrum. After JioPhone and JioPhone 2, both Jio and UNISOC are in talks with homegrown smartphone makers – Micromax and Lava — with the aim to bring cheap 4G smartphones in India. With this initiative, Jio, UNISOC, Lava and Micromax are aiming to bring 4G connectivity to every corner of the country and allow all users to have access to the faster wireless mobile internet and connect to the world.

Companies like Lava and Micromax have been coming up with budget-friendly smartphones, but sadly, they lacked some of the key features like WhatsApp, Facebook and more so, internet browsing. Phones powered by UNISOC chipset will bring these features to the cheap phones.

Other chip-making companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek gave a tough fight to UNISOC as the latter isn’t as powerful as the first two. Additionally, survival has been difficult for UNISOC in this emerging marketplace because the majority of its revenue comes from booming JioPhone sales in India. This news was reported by ET.

UNISOC to Increase Revenues by Partnering With Lava and Micromax

Reports claimed that JioPhone and the JioPhone 2 had seen a massive success in India. According to the latest report, the Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio has managed to sell nearly 40 million JioPhone units in the country, including an average sale of 7 million every month in the last three months. Back in July, Jio confirmed that it has over 25 million JioPhone users, but the number must’ve increased by now.

Reliance Jio launched the JioPhone last year and JioPhone 2 this year with QWERTY keypad and with both these phones the company took over the Indian feature phone market by a storm. UNISOC claims that these dirt-cheap phones paired with music and streaming services and also apps like WhatsApp, YouTube and Google and more, had increased the market share of the company by 40 per cent.

However, compared to the smartphone segment, the feature phone sales in India have been slipping for a long time now. This state worries UNISOC and hence the company is planning to make a comeback to the market by partnering with Lava and Micromax and bring cheap phones with great specs.

Price of Lava and Micromax Phones

These aforementioned Micromax and Lava smartphones are said to be powered by UNISOC 9863 and will come with a budget-friendly price tag. UNISOC believes that its comeback will target the Rs 6,999 price segment phones, but then the problem is, other popular smartphone makers like Realme, Xiaomi, Honor, among others, who already have some of their best phones like Redmi 5A, Redmi 6A and Realme C1 in this price.

Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 Price in India Hiked; Mi TV 4C, 4A, and Mi Power Bank 2i Too Become Costlier

Gadgets 360 Staff, 10 November 2018

Redmi 6A price in India will now start at Rs. 6,599

HIGHLIGHTS

Redmi 6A starting price has been increased to Rs. 6,599

Redmi 6 will now start at Rs. 8,499, an increase of Rs. 500

Mi TV prices increased by up to Rs. 2,000

Xiaomi India on Saturday announced price hikes for two its most affordable smartphones — the Redmi 6A and Redmi 6 — as well as select TV and powerbank models. Xiaomi said in a statement on Twitter that the price increase was necessary due to "a significant rise in input cost" thanks to rupee that has "depreciated against the dollar by nearly 15 percent".

Xiaomi Redmi 6A (2GB+16GB) will now retail at Rs. 6,599, a price increase of Rs. 600 from its introductory launch price of Rs. 5,999. Xiaomi said the 2GB RAM and 32GB storage variant of the Redmi 6A will now retail at Rs. 7,499, an increase of Rs. 500.

It's worth pointing out that Xiaomihad indicated at the time of the launch of the Redmi 6A in India in early September that the pricing of the smartphone may be revised upwards in a couple of months if rupee's slide continues, so the move is hardly unexpected. However, the increase in price of other products may come as a bit of surprise to Mi fans.

The entry-level variant of the Redmi 6 will now retail at Rs. 8,499, an increase of Rs. 500 as compared to its launch price of Rs. 7,999. As of now, the price of the 3GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant of the Redmi 6 remains unchanged at Rs. 9,499.

Two of the recently launched Mi LED TVs have also seen their prices increased. The Mi LED TV 4C Pro 32 and Mi LED TV 4A Pro 49 will now retail at Rs. 15,999 and Rs. 31,999 respectively, an increase of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 2,000 respectively.

Finally, the 10000mAh Mi Power Bank 2i continues its up-again, down-again pricing trend with a new price tag of Rs. 899, an increase of Rs. 100.

All new prices will be effective from midnight, November 11.

Do you have a feature phone? Beware! This terrible fate awaits !

Tue, 06 Nov 2018-11:37 am,

The swift uptake of 4G mobile services in India might push 2G mobile handsets out of business in the next two to three years. Out of a total of over 1 billion users, only 400 million own smartphones, i.e. hooked onto high-speed internet.
New Delhi: The swift uptake of 4G mobile services in India might push 2G mobile handsets out of business in the next two to three years. Out of a total of over 1 billion users, only 400 million own smartphones, i.e. hooked onto high-speed internet. The number of internet users has been growing at a fast pace, as access to data services and 4G enabled handsets became affordable with the entry of new player Reliance Jio.
The remaining 800 million users are still on 2G feature phones, which offer only basic voice and SMS facilities. During January-August period, the 4G-enabled feature phones captured 39% of the overall feature phone market, registering a whopping growth of 5,959% (owing to a low base in the previous year) compared to the same period in previous year, according to data from Counterpoint Research.
In the same period, 2G phones saw a decline of 13 % and now account for 61% of the total handset market. Prabhu Ram, an analyst with Cyber Media Group, says, “The 2G pie is decreasing and expected to decline gradually over the next two-three years.”
The growth in number of internet users was also bolstered by the launch of Jio Phone, a 4G-enabled feature phone at low cost. Reliance’s Jio phone is driving 99% of the 4G feature phone market and rest of the market is distributed amongst Lava, Micromax and Intex, Karn Chauhan, an analyst from Counterpoint Research said.
Jio phone is winning the customers with its attractive offerings in prepaid as well as in postpaid channels which provide free calling and the cheapest data packs to users. To get onboard more customers, JioPhone has also strengthened its operating system (KaiOS) with the addition of popular apps such as Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp, he said.
Airtel has recently announced a cashback of Rs 2,000 for upgrading to a 4G new smartphone. It has tie-ups with many handset manufacturers for offering 4G phones across varied price range but does not plan to venture into 4G feature phones as the focus is on high average revenue per user (Arpu), according to people aware of the development.

It is pertinent to mention here that all 2G users are low ARPU users. Jio phone is highly subsidised, according to many experts, and no other handset maker is willing to go high scale with 4G feature phone because of the economies of scale.
The current market conditions make it difficult for mobile handset brands to venture into 4G feature phones, except a few, like HMD and Lava. To counter the pricing of Jio phones, mobile handset brands require economies of scale with adequate support from telecom service providers which is not the case currently, Ram said.
Currently, the only silver lining is increased data usage following the onset of 4G services, resulting in telecom players expanding their 4G coverage.

Good story...

We’re No Longer in Smartphone Plateau. We’re in the Smartphone Decline.

[ LINK: ] http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/12/global-u-s-growth-in-smartphone-growth-starts-to-decline.html
The days of double-digit smartphone growth are over — and the next decade may start to see smartphone sales decline.

From roughly 2007 until 2013, the smartphone market grew at an astonishing pace, posting double-digit growth year after year, even during a global recession. They were the good years, [...] millions and then billions of smartphones going out; billions and then trillions of dollars in rising company valuations; every year new models of phones hitting the market, held up triumphantly at events that were part sales pitch, part tent revival.

But [...] Smartphone growth began to slow starting in 2013 or 2014. In 2016, it was suddenly in the single digits, and in 2017 global smartphone shipments, for the first time, actually declined — fewer smartphones were sold than in 2017 than in 2016.

Every smartphone manufacturer is now facing a world where, at best, they can hope for single-digit growth in smartphone sales — and many seem to be preparing for a world where they face declines.

[...] The idea of a “smartphone plateau” has been floating around since at least 2012, with the phrase entering common usage in the middle of this decade. It has a twofold meaning. One is the slowdown in smartphone innovation, [...] The other meaning is the flattening of smartphone sales.

Some manufacturers and analysts may hope that flat sales in the developed world could be offset by strong sales in other markets. Fat chance. The markets where smartphone saturation hasn’t set in yet — such as India, Southeast Asia, pockets of Latin America, and Africa — are different than the markets that fueled the first decade of smartphone growth. “In those markets, there are extremely competitive devices down near the equivalent of $200,” says Stanton. “It’s becoming a real battlefield, but it’s a low-margin business and consumers down at the those price points tend to be not very brand-centric. That really plays into hands of a few really hyperaggressive brands of smartphones, most of which are coming from China.”

The Artificial Replacement Cycle
If you’ve bought flagship phone in this year, you likely won’t need to buy a replacement until the next decade. “Most people have more phone than they can handle, or need,” says Gartner senior principal analyst Tuong Nguyen. [...]

Big achievement for Jio: Don't miss

Yesterday

New Delhi, Dec 13- Jio has shown a significant growth & strong performance in crucial states and rural mobile markets Recently, that has to lead to its an increase in the RMS (revenue market share) by as much as 375 BP (basis points), to over 26% at the end of September. On the other hand, Airtel’s RMS dipped 75 bps to 30.9% amid revenue losses in seven key markets, while VIL’s plunged 190 bps on-quarter to 32.8%, amid revenue slides nearly across India.

Jio’s Monsoon Hungama offer of exchanging any old feature phone for a Jio Phone for just Rs1,000 with six months of recharge included proved to be a major reason in the sharp upsurge in the Ambani-owned Telcom's subscriber base in the last quarter.Airtel has paid a heavy price for refusing to fight Jio in the VoLTE feature phone market. The network lost as many as 6.6 million subscribers just in the last quarter, whereas Jio reported a 37 million customer additions during the same period, making its total customer base to over 252 million. Things are similar for the current market leader, Vodafone Idea, which also refused to counter Jio in the 4G feature phone segment, they lost 13 million customers in the second fiscal quarter, riled by a mix of brutal price wars and rising cost.

Bernstein has estimated Jio to reach 28% RMS and 26% subscriber share by March next year, especially if Airtel and VIL don’t counter Jio’s move to subsidise its 4G feature phone market. Both Airtel and Vodafone idea managements have indicated that they don’t believe in handset subsidies for prepaid users. Now if Jio is left unchallenged, it can reach the leading revenue market share position by 2021 and by subscribers by 2022, the global brokerage.Analysts are expecting that Airtel and VIL’s decision to unveil minimum recharge plans will see both the networks collectively losing 56 million customers by the fourth quarter of 2019.
