Can we carry alcohol in the checked-in luggage?

I will be visiting a friend soon and I need to take some alcohol with me. I am flying with IndiGo. I don't know much about rules regarding carrying alcohol on flights except for the fact that I can NOT carry it in cabin luggage. Can anybody help?

Well, I'm not sure about the exact rules. But once while flying Indigo, I had to leave two bottles of Vodka with the security. They said I can carry them only if I had a hard shell luggage.

I even declared & got a "Fragile" stuck to my bag. :p
It was a VIP traveler, not precisely hard shell, but with Textile cover. (Do not know what it is called)

When was this?
Either the rules changed after that or the buggers had a nice party, thanks to me.

PS: Probably the VIP traveler might have saved it. I only had a trekking backpack with me.

Only time I traveled with Indigo was on 11th March 2013 to Mumbai & on 16th March 2013 from Mumbai to Delhi. (When I went for Frames).

VIP Traveler could be a possibility, Rucksack could be an issue.
It happened like this. At the Checkin counter, I asked to put a "Fragile". They asked what are you carrying. I told, scotch. They asked, is it properly & safely packed. I Said yes, its clubbed between clothes & has its own box too. They put a fragile & Let go.

On return, they didn't even ask about packaging. I Asked for Fragile, they asked for content, I told Scotch, they put Fragile.

My incidence was before this. It was while I was returning from EBC.
But yeah, I guess it must have been because of the backpack.
