Churdhar ; Lesser but not the least

A new day :

It was time to head back. But i wished to visit the pinnacle once as i had not been able to make it last night. Secondly i wanted to confirm what animal it was which i spotted last night. Though it was daylight, i was cautious of hideouts behind the big boulders. I was whistling at every blind spot in order to make my presence felt . Soon i reached the same site where i spotted the black figures. The footmarks were still there. The fear of their presence somewhere near was still there. Shiva idol was hardly 50 yards away from this place, didn’t wanted to go back again coming so close to top. Overcoming my fear demons i stepped forward an reached to the top in next 10 mins.

It offered me 360’ view , kind of one you see from the top of Chandershilla. From this point if one follow the ridge to the south west , he can reach Teesri in around an hour, but negotiating boulders in snow was a challenging task and the trail was also not marked so had to come back where i started in the morning at the temple premises

The last Folly: Descend into Tranha forest

I had heard that trail from Haripurdhar side is also scenic, so thought of killing the two bird with the same stone. Inquired the route from a local at the temple and started my descend at around 1015 hrs. The trail descends down steeply along with electric lines which leads to a transformer , one looses some altitude of 500meters, then it goes down gently into the valley where there is a naala (stream) , There onwards it’s a smooth walk by the side of river till you reaches the first village which is on the right bank of the river. To reach here one has to cross the stream numerous numbers of times. Though the trail is by the side of river, at times i found it confusing which side of river should i follow and took the wrong trail twice. The locals claim this route to be shorter from the Nauradhar trail, it took me good five and half hour to reach at the village ‘Tranha’ where one meet first road-head. From this point you can get a ride to Haripurdhar. I reached there well in time at 1500 hrs , before the last bus leaves the village, but to my dismay the bus had been cancelled , it didn’t show up. Waited there for more than 2-3 hrs , but couldn’t find a single vehicle going to Haripurdhar. So, planned to spend the night at one and only home stay available there. Got a warm welcome by the hosts and enjoyed the dinner by the side of Chulha (Wood-fire stove). They only charged Rs 100 for the meal, tea & the bed. Left early in the morning around 6 and reach Norahadhar by 1100 hrs, it took 5 hours to cover a journey of 80 kms. There are no roads in this part of Sirmour. From Nohradhar, took my bike and reached Panchkula at 1700 hrs.

Total time taken (Trek + drive) : 2 night 3days ( Start & Finish) at Panchkula

Distance covered; 30 kms by walk (Nohardhar –Teesri - Churdhar - Tranha) , 440 kms drive (Panchkula to Nohradhar & Tranha to Panchkula)

Expense: Rs 1000 (including, fuel, stay, meals, bus fare)

Lesson learnt:

· Start before the dawn and reach before the dusk.

· Make a checklist; write down things, a petty item like matchbox, Torch or a battery bank can make a big difference.

· Two are certainly better than one, find a companion during the trek or hire a local to show you the way.

Soon i spotted the Trident & flag on the top of the peak some 200 meters above me, which means i can at least find a shelter in the cave underneath it for the night. A fellow bcmtian Sidharth has told his tale how he and his friends spend the 11 hrs in a cave beneath Shiva Idol when they lose their way.

One should always thank god for the current circumstance as thing could have been worse than you ever imagine.

THAT SIDDHARTH guy you mentioned, thats me !! :supz: you were lucky to find the temple complex on that very same day... where as we had to lay side by side in the pujari gufa like a can of sardines..!! here's the link to my thread !!! Hope nobody loose their way in future .. :D
