    Please suggest us an itinerary for covering the Changthang region exclusively in early December.

    We are 2 riders and are flying in and out of Leh, 5th Dec to 12th December.
    We plan to hire 2 motorcycles (through contacts) and take them out for Pangong towards Chusul to Hanle side.

    Wish to explore the Kaksang La side as well apart from Hanle to Tso Moriri via Chumur side.

    Could someone suggest a workable itinerary for the places?

    For Kasksang La route and the Chumur route to Tso Moriri you will have to do it on your own risk, since you won't get permit for these routes.

    It would be a good idea to ride towards Khardung La or somewhere else from Leh on the second day. Just a quick ride to those places and back to get used to cold and altitude. Just don't spend too much time there. Also make sure to get a portable oxygen cylinder as backup.

    The itinerary you can try is somthinso like this:

    5th: arrive and rest.

    6th: get the permit made and ride towards Khardung La.

    7th: Leh to Panogng Tso. You can stay at Spangmik or Merak. Make sure to start early from Leh, since in even the streams en route to Spangmik and Merak will start freezing.

    8th: Pangong Tso to Chumathang via Kasksang La.

    9th: Chumthang to Hanle

    10th: Hanle to Tso Moriri

    11th: Tso Moriri to Tso Kar

    As you can see, this would be cutting close to your flight back on 12th, so if possible, you can try and reach Hanle or Tso Moriri on 8th. That is if you still have ample day light remaining.

    You will have to buy fuel in black as well and the best place to get it would be at Durbuk, Merak, Chushul, Chumathang, Nyoma Hanle.

    Thank you Yogesh bhai for the detailed itinerary.

    1. What if we take permits on 5th of December itself and take the bike towards Khardungla upto South pullu to check the bike condition as well as to prepare the body for high altitude?
    2. Do we have stay options at Chushul, if we opt against Merak?
    3. Tanglang La would be closed that time or could be open? I mean can we plan Tso Moriri to Tso Kar to Tanglang La towards Leh?

    I believe December will be dry cold and don't have much of Snow what do you say?

    I believe so, after reading so many winter logs here. It might close of a day or two if heavy snowfall happens, but will surely be opened asap...

    Ah..that's good then..
    But it would have hard snow enroute and that's really scary to ride on..

    It is open throughout the year. Closes for a couple of days in case of heavy snowfall or a major landslide/avalanche.

    1. I wouldn't recommend it. Even on day 2 it is pushing it, but on day 1 it would be all the more dangerous.

    2. A place or two might be open. But frankly speaking, you're better off staying at Merak. It is a lot more scenic, better bet of finding accommodation and less chance of getting in the eyes of army.

    3. It would likely be open, but I would advise against doing that. Tanglang La gets snowfall at evening and that is likely the time you will cross it.

    I hope you will take all your ridimg gears & accessories from Delhi for riding in cold conditions. Just consult with @deepakdilme also. He also has done such extreme ride.

    Bike also may need snow chains & Accessories etc.

    I know who is your Second Partner in crime !

    Yes Sir, Santosh has consulted with DG bhai and planning accordingly.

    And yes, I know you knew the second partner in crime, you keep a close tab on everything happening on the forum and the WhatsApp group.

    Any idea what size of portable oxygen cylinder would do, and apart from the cylinder, what accessories (breathing kit etc) we need to make it usable?

    Based on your recommendation, this is what we have revised as -

    5th: arrive and rest, get permits and bike arrangements. Take bike towards Leh-Shrinagar road for test ride.
    6th: Leh to Hanle via Nyoma, Loma Bridge. How long this should take being conservative?
    7th: Hanle and Nearby
    8th: Hanle to Tso Moriri via Chumur Side.
    9th: Tso Moriri, Leave for Chumathang after lunch
    10th: Chumathang - Mahe Bridge - Kaksang La - Chushul (Detour to Rezang La Memorial & return) to Merak. How long this stretch would take? We dont want riding in dark in unknown land.
    11th: Merak to Leh via Chang La
    12th : Flight to Delhi

    Do you suggest the above?
