Man steals data of 14 lakh e-shoppers, sells it

Greater Noida: A 23-year-old man, Nandan Rao Patel, was arrested for allegedly stealing
data of 14 lakh customers of several e-commerce sites in collusion with employees of the retail companies. Police said the accused allegedly sold the data of the customers to various sham call centres, who later used them to cheat people.
STF officers said they were flooded with complaints not only from online shoppers but also a bank, which reported
data theft. The bank told police its customers were being cheated by fake call centres on the pretext of lucky draw contests or GST/ income tax registration.

The accused, an original resident of Bihar, had been living in a rented apartment in Amrapali Sapphire society in Sector 45. He is a final-year MBA student in Amity University and a cyber expert, police said.
Patel was arrested around 8pm on Saturday from his office in Sector 142. The cops recovered two mobile phones and a laptop containing data of around 14 lakh customers of various online shopping companies.
“The accused revealed that he is a director of a digital marketing company. He said that he bought data from two employees of an e-commerce site at Rs 2-3 per customer and sold it to fake call centres in Delhi NCR, Bihar, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Punjab at Rs 5-6 per customer,”
said Vishal Vikram Singh, additional SP (STF). Singh said the callers used fake customer details to open bank accounts and keep the stolen money with the help of bank employees. An FIR has been registered against Patel under IPC sections 420 (cheating), 406 (punishment for Criminal breach of trust), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document).
