Day 5 (Lachen -> Chungtham -> Lachung -> Yumthang -> Zero Point -> Lachung):

We were already running late from the scheduled time. While travelling to North Sikkim, never plan without a buffer time because there isno certainty at all. Anytime anything can happen so always be prepared for whatever comes your way. One whole day was wasted due to landslide and health issues. So today we had to cover Zero Point and stay at Lachung. Without any halt we entered Chungthang fast. Made some more copies of the permit. Already had hotel booking in Lachung because the hotel owner of Lachen had a friend’s hotel out there. Made an entry in the hotel, dumb the bags and transverse to Zero Point.

Ready to move for Yumesamsong (Zero Point)

At the onset of the rhododendron sanctuary, everyone was overwhelmed with joy. The beautiful flowers and the bright colors brighten everyone’s face with a smile. For me and my wife it was the 2nd turn so the joy was a little less. Rather we could notice that most of the trees have been cut down and show there were less flowers in the area. At some places due to soil erosion the plants has been uprooted. My past pictures in this sanctuary looked stunning.

I had learn that a new lake has also formed before Yumthang valley. Recent earthquake has brought down a complete hill and the rocks have rolled down to the river blocking a small part of it. This small part formed a new lake.

Day 5 continued ...

I kept these place for the return trip and decided to reach Zero Point first. If the weather turns bad we will not be able to climb. But when we reached the army post where in 2013 we were greeted as a chief guest, we were literally annoyed. My wife kept on grudging that we are not going to get any snowfall this time. Till far places we could not see any trace of ice. In 2013 this post was full of snow, we prayed so that we could witness some snowfall at some more height, but all in vain. Last time we could not make to Zero Point because the roads were fill of thick snow. The tyre of the bikes gave way. The snaps can show how we were standing there with our boots dug inside the snow.

At the highest point there was a small chunk of snow where the river has frozen. People were dancing on the small chunk. Any ways but for my mom this was more than enough. My mom was shivering but still she did not hesitated to click some snaps sitting on the ice.

Day 5 continued ...

Now let me dwell again in the past because I cannot move forward without mentioning this story. I have already mentioned about the army post where we were greeted like chief guest. The reason being that a soldier was keen so serve us with piping hot thick milk tea. He had no one to talk to and he was delighted to see us coming so far away on a bike. First when he asked me to come in, I was a bit skeptical as my friend has crossed the turning and could not see us. I told the man that I have a friend with me so let me call him also. He not only served us with tea but also with biscuits, masala peanuts and much more. He said that he will be going home on leaves and so the food in his stock will be wasted. They cannot consume so much food at higher altitudes because then it will be hard to digest. He packed our bags with fruit juice and biscuit packets as a token of thanks.
