Everest Base Camp Trek Sept-Oct 2019

Happy being a nomad.
25 Sept 2019
Day-3 of trek
Paiya (2761 MSL) to Phakding (2642 MSL)
Total Trek today 25.7 KMS.

I forgot to mention that Supriya was bitten by a Leech in her room at Juving-2 on 23rd night. It was on the bed and she some how managed to dislodge it, but not before it had its fill. So we now checked our beds before sleeping. Ram also got bit by another Leech during the trek yesterday. He was wearing a sandal due to rains. Due to rains and vegetation Leech are a menace and one has to be careful and be prepared while trekking.

We slept well and our body was getting used to the physical workouts and we were feeling better. The wash areas are mostly outside in tea houses and we have to use the cold water for brushing and shaving. Luckily this tea house had western WC and that too inside. We were thrilled with that.

We started our trek again at 7:30AM after customary breakfast of Omelet/paratha and Ginger tea. Shreen gave us an idea that we now climb downwards till Surke (2300MSL) and then climb upwards to Chheplung (2693MSL) for lunch and then down again to Phakding (2642 MSL) our planned night stay. We would cross Dhudh Kosi many times today.

Typical building in this part of Nepal.

Out stay at Paiya.

Flights attempting to land on 25th Sept. They could not land so it was all quiet today. Just Helicopter traffic.

The grass is greener on the other side is the proverb:

It was downcast the whole day and we were thankful for that as it made the trek easier but we lost on all photo opportunities.

Rest break for tea and water.

We reached Surke and had tea break

Dhudh Kosi again

Timber bridge

We started climbing again towards Chheplung our planned lunch stop and Sreen promised us Wifi there (we had no wifi or phone connectivity since we left Phaplu on 23rd morning).

Still in clouds......

More bridges to cross, more stupas and more rocks to cross.

Flowers on mud roof....

Beautiful stupas......

More stone craving.....

More rest...

Lunch thail with free wifi. We send messages to family and friends of our well being.

Tea hose at Chheplung. On our return journey we would take the road to Lukla from here.

Restart after lunch break towards Phakding...

Still clouds....

We could see more density of Tea house as we approached Phadking.

Dhudh Kosi again.....

Our night stay at Phakding.....we reached there by 6:00 PM. It was long trek today covering 25 kms.

Dinning Room and we had NCELL wifi here so everyone was busy.....

Dhudh Kosi outside our Tea house

Kanak posing...

This was the best hotel till date and we had hot shower at NR 500. The rooms had attached baths and complementary phone charging. We met for dinner at 7:30PM after all taking showers.

We had assorted dinner of junk food today- pizza, pasta and Momos. Supriya had a terrible cold and sore throat. So we ordered Khukri rum, hot water, honey and dry ginger. After a stiff drink all felt good.

We were now running 4 days behind our original plan (we were to be here on 21st Sept). It had taken us 70 KMS of extra trekking to reach this place.

Tomorrow we would start for Namche Bazaar. We noticed that the Tea house quality/facility are much much better on the route from Lukla than from Phaplu to Phadking.

20th Sept 2019:

We reached Kathmandu and it took some time to complete the immigration and collect luggage (huge rush in the mornings as many flights land). Even our Fly Dubai landing was delayed due to busy airstrip. Tribhuvan airport has one strip.

We then took NCELL 30 days validity prepaid connection for Nepali Rs 800 (it gave 5 GB 4G data and 40 mins talk time). I had read that NCELL have a good network on EBC area (It did not work after Namche Bazar). They need a photograph and passport copy for the connection.

We were received by Explore Vacation representative and transferred to our hotel in Thamel "Hotel Marshyangdi". We checked in, freshened up and were hungry as we had skipped breakfast. We went for lunch as Supriya was to land at 13:00 and we were sure it would be late to wait for her. Had Everest beer while waiting for lunch. Food in Nepal is always freshly cooked.

Then we did some shopping (backpack cover, dry fit T-shirts, pants, including water purification tablets. Rabi was to meet us at 17:00 in the hotel lobby to update us of the trek and introduce their tour manager Ram. Supriya had checked in and joined us for the meeting. We exchanged some money (I exchanged UAE Dhs) required for the trip (NRs 15K) and for balance payment to Explore Vacation.

Rabi told us that our flight to Lukla was at 8:00AM (Sita Air) and we had to leave the hotel by 6 AM. We were given duffel bags and told to pack 10-12 kgs only and our back pack to 3 kgs.

We repacked and then all 4 went to Thamel market for second round of shopping and then took a hotel taxi to Pashupatinath temple for darshan and seek blessing for safe trek to EBC.

Had early dinner and went to bed thrilled that the trek was to begin.

Hi Driver

I am not sure. We did not pay anything as we climbed the steps to the temple from East side and it was past 7:30 PM when we reached the top. All kiosks were closed. Sorry could not provide you your information correctly.
