This was the second occasion in less than three months that an invitation to a marriage of a colleague made me travel to places where I had never been to. In January 2014, such invitation resulted in Wanderings in Sirmour: A marriage we happily attended. Now a marriage of a colleague on 2nd May 2014 presented an opportunity to visit Jhansi. However, I wasn’t interested much in Jhansi but the nearby Orchha excited me very much. The only problem was that summers was fast peaking with temperatures already soaring towards the other side of forties. Nevertheless, me and few of my other colleagues intending to attend the marriage booked Shatabdi train tickets to Jhansi. This was after long time that I was travelling by train apart from official travels.

Return ticket was booked for the next evening, which was Saturday. I was not comfortable wasting a Sunday at home when I had a chance to explore Orchha and Jhansi for one more extra day. Thus I extended my travel by one more day. As the days neared and by the last evening before we were scheduled to leave, all but me had backed out from the program. I wasn’t keen to visit Orchha solo in hot conditions which made me withdraw too. I thought it was better to visit any hill station, particularly Mukteshwar which had eluded me since last many years. With these thoughts I started for home from office. However as soon as I reached home, one of my colleagues who did not figure in our original plan called and offered a road trip to Jhansi in his Honda Civic with a condition though, to return by Saturday night as he had some commitments on Sunday morning. My Thar badly needed a tyre change and I could not risk doing a 450 km one side road trip completely worn out tyres. I accepted the offer even though I had to sacrifice one day.

Next morning my colleague and badminton partner Manish picked me up from my home sharp at 5.30 am. We fuelled up at a South Delhi petrol pump before hitting the highway. Early in the morning traffic was much less and we made good progress. We made a tea stop at a small dhaba just after crossing Palwal around 7.00 am. A divine tea experience made us order parathas with curd which again turned out to be heavenly. We had a non-stop dash till Agra from where we took a bye-pass to NH-3 which literally gave a bye-pass to Manish. The potholes were big and bad enough to swallow his Civic completely. The 10 odd kms journey took more than an hour to traverse. We felt it was safe to drive through the pot-holes than find the elusive surfaced roads. Like every bad dream, it got over when we rolled on to the fabulous strip of NH 3.

Nice pics.....I hope the road from Gwalior-Dabra-Datia must have been repaired. I travelled to Sagar in October 2013 in my Hyundai Verna, and the stretch from Gwalior-Jhansi via Dabra and Datia is the worst road I've encountered till date....While returning I took extra 100 kms via Shivpuri in order to avoid the stretch.
