Hello.

I am from the UK hope someone can answer the following .

I bought a bike 5 years ago through a friend in Goa . I use the bike when i stay in Goa . I have also done a couple of trips to Kerala over the years but just for two weeks .

I am planning shipping the bike to Chandigarh . Then spending two months ride around the north of India .I have the log book , insurance puc cert & international driving licence.

Do I need to get a letter from a notary saying I am responsible for the bike or do i need to get official paperwork from the RTO office ?
Or is there some other paper work needed ?

For clarity, The bike's Registration certificate is registered in the name of AN INDIAN PERSON? and not you?

If that is not the case do indian authorities allow foreigners to buy vehicles in Bharat (India)?

Technically it is your friend's bike. U cannt tell the cops that it is your bike. Ha ha.

So 2 separate topics.

1. How to ensure bike is legal to ride: It should have Original RC paper. Valid insurance (on name of owner). Valid pollution certificate.

2. How to proove that he has given his bike to you willingly and you have not stolen it. And also to proove that Your friend is not using it for commercial purpose (Cops may think so because you dont have Indian passport).
This is simple for Indian citizens. If I randomly borrow a bike from a friend and ride, I must carry above 3 originals with me, I show to cops, and I am good to go.
At max he will ask who is owner and I can put him on phone and he can verify on phone with owner. However this much is never asked.

In your case you should carry either a handwritten letter from your friend. Or better, a Notary stamped letter on Rs100 stamp paper stating that he has willfully given it to you for driving around and you are good friends.
Also carry a copy of his Driving permit or ID proof.

Note: you cannt take this to Leh because their local union wants Only the owner driven vehicles coming there.
