Hello all :)

Im an American woman who's been planning a trip to India for the last year, I have my plane tickets booked for February 2nd and Im very excited. The only thing is Ive been putting off sending in my visa application because Im afraid being unemployed might cause some problems. Some people have advised me to just put my last job and employer details because the Indian consulate wont check that stuff. I don't have a criminal record or any family members from Pakistan, so theres no other reason I would be denied. Im afraid if I put my old employer details there could be a slight chance that they will call my old employer...and then I would probably get black listed foe lying on a visa application and then Id be totally screwed ):

I should also probably mention that Im going to India to marry my gorgeous Indian fiance...so there's alot riding on this haha.

Anyone with any advice or experience on this??

Lying in a VISA application is never a good idea. I have met many many foreigners who have left their jobs and are here on tourist VISA, exploring the country (though I am not sure what they mentioned in the VISAs while applying).
I might not be the right person to actually suggest you what to do but, at-least I can suggest you what not to do.

No lying in the VISA form. Good Luck!

I dont really think you should be worried... I know many travel blogger who have left job and are traveling full time, without any issues.
As long as you have a valid passport no issues getting a tourist visa.

+1 to what Ankur said above. Additional to that you might also need to show proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.

Thats the problem, Im an unemployed 20 year old, what I have in the bank probably won't prove "sufficient" to them. Im staying with my boyfriend and he'll be taking care of me....Im trying to avoid having to send them my bank statement because it CERTAINLY won't help my case.

What are the requirements/eligibility criteria for US nationals?

In my jurisdiction (Houston) they require of course, the application and all the many particulars forms and order forms, your passport, a copy of your passport, a copy of your ID and 2 passport sized pictures. If you're a housewife or self employed they require bank statements from the last 3 months. However in the San Francisco jurisdiction they require the same if you're unemployed, and they are allowed to ask for additional documents once your application has been reviewed, and this is what Im afraid of.

As far as I know its not difficult to get an Indian visa as an American citizen as long as you or your family aren't from Pakistan and you don't have a criminal record. However I can't find anyone who has any experience with being unemployed and applying for a normal, 6 month tourist visa.

Then getting an invitation and undertaking to sponsor your stay here from your boyfriend may help. Isn't?
Welcome to India. :)
