As regards parking rules, in San Francisco city, if the side of the footpath is coloured red, it is a no-parking zone. However this is not the case in DC and other states.
Sorry for the late reply!

Can you post a snap of this? it'll be really helpful.

Thanks.

Great timing for this thread. I am planning a driving trip in US west coast and was looking for some info. I have a paper driving license (in english). Will it work or do i need IDP for the same. Also address on my DL is different than passport, will it create any issue?

You don't need an IDP in the U.S. as it's in English (I didn't use or need one on my trips to the U.S.)
Different address is not a problem. But the date of birth must match.

Came across this thread today. A very good compilation. A couple of comments:

"11. If there's a baby on board, a child seat is compulsory. There's some age limit ... 12 or so mostly. After that, normal adult seat-belts are fine."

In New Jersey state, a child 6 years or older does not need a child seat; (s)he can even sit on front seat using the adult seat belt.

"28. School bus overtaking rules:
Most countries have particularly strict rules governing overtaking of school buses ... esp. when they're parked & are loading / unloading children. You cannot overtake it! ... This also applies if you are on the opposite side of the road so beware of this rule (try following what others are doing )".

One need not wait if there is a road divider between the up and down traffic, and if the bus and your car are on opposite sides of the divider. I sheepishly discovered this fact as cars behind mine passed ('overtook') me ignoring the school bus with flashing red lights on the other side of the road divider.
The thumb rule is what Manan wrote: "try following what others are doing".
