There are lots of distracting elements in foreground, it is best to shoot portraits using either a zoom or wide aperture or combination of both. The focusing will narrow down on the subject thus everything behind subject will be not be in focus thus achieving a bokeh effect or a shallow depth of field. When shooting anything, try from various angles and always focus on the eyes.
