Since summer vacation is going on, I am sure you can find a few relatives / friends / firend's friend etc going out of India for vacation, better give excess dollars to them and get INR in return. It will be a win win situation.

Legally you can take USD 10000 but only USD 3000 Per person in currency notes Balance in TRaveller cheques forex card etc. But really speaking nobody at airport normally check you cash and it is not endorsed on passport.

... Load it here for a paltry sum of about INR150 processing fee and make cash withdrawals from ATMs abroad for a transaction fee of about INR 100!! Nothing can be cheaper than that!...
I just got the Matrix Forex card from ICICI and their International charges are $1.5 ie., less cheaper than Rs. 100/-

*And there is a secondary card too, in case you loose the first one!

He he, there another charge of about :r:116/- that will be debited from your account soon! Service charge.
The upfront 'loading charge' is only 55/- at SBI but then you find 116/- deducted from your account for service!

What is the charge for making cash withdrawals abroad? SBI has been charging Euro 1.5 for each cash withdrawal, regardless of amount withdrawn.

Do keep us posted.

The secondary card is a good idea. SBI did not give one.

There will be always some or the other hidden charge. Huh!!

The ATM withdrawal charge is $1.5 and $0.5 for balance inquiry. Online balance inquiry is however FREE!!

Also, it seems to provide some sort of Insurance too, which covers quite a few things.

I was too lazy to read all the stuff so, taking the shortcut ;-)

I don't get the purpose of this thread. Since Dkay has less than $5,000 he can take it with him. The whole question of how much USD I can take with me becomes relevant when Dkay is going to an Indian bank asking for USD.

When leaving India, it is not like someone is going to check your bags for USD.

Things are much better now ! When we went to the US in 1984 (yes that unfortunate year) USD was a precious commodity in India and we just had enough USD in pocket to take a taxi home from JFK. I dont remember the exact amount, but the measely amount was endorsed on our passports.

Oh how the times have changed..
