How to disable auto merging of posts

This feature has been discontinued.

As announced earlier in the day, posts in all sections are now being automatically merged (with the exception of compose your travelogue section and from the road), since it can be highly inconvenient for other members to have to go through multiple constitutive posts in the same thread.

However this auto merging of posts can be counterproductive for those posting image heavy travelogue and lead to a fairly heavy page for the viewer.

Hence based on feedback from members and internal dicussion, moderation team has decided to keep the auto merge feature applicable across the forum and disable the same only in exceptional cases. For which a member will have to send a private message to me and auto merging of their posts will be disabled.

However, since this will be applicable in all sections, members requesting this will not only have to ensure that they do not abuse this feature and they also should not have any prior history of bumping threads or posting multiple consequtive replies.

Wouldnt this mean more work? How about a dedicated Ladakh Itinerary & Ladakh Travelogue sections that are displayed directly on home page.

Not really. It takes us less time to disable this for a user than merging consecutive posts. Members in turn don't have to deal with those bumping threads repeatedly.

Yes disabling is an automatic process but then you'll have to review multiple posts that have requests for disabling the auto merge on their thread / posts which will be pretty time consuming.

People bump their thread so that it gets noticed by other members, if the busy sections like itinerary and travelogues are opened up a little more, there would be lesser need to bump their threads.

The travelog may be structured in a particular manner by the author... consecutive posts may present different contexts of a narrative.
Compulsory merging may not be such a great idea.

The forum certainly needs an entire sub-forum on all aspects of Ladakh Travel. It is the USP of this community.

While an author might feel that it is alright to have a travelogue with several dozen posts, each containing one or two images and few lines of text, for vast majority of the readers it would annoying and cumbersome to navigate through.

So as a community, we have to find a balance between both and at the moment, this is balancing things out.

Like everything else, we will revisit this at a later stage and if it is found to be impractical for vast majority of members, it may be modified or completely removed.

Ps. Ladakh already has a dedicated sub-section, where all queries related to Ladakh are moved.

Ladakh has a sub section but its shown under the sub forum Itinerary & Travelogues. Since these are the most active sub forums mostly thread related to it are displayed on the home page which might be the reason why many members interested in non ladakh destinations might be bumping their threads to seek attention.

Create a separate section for Ladakh Itinerary & Travelogs which are displayed on the home page.

Apart from the Ladakh season, Ladakh itinerary section is rarely as active as the main itinerary section.

Ladakh travelogues are another story altogether, mainly due to the fact that they are generally much bigger than other travelogues due to number of days required for a normal Ladakh trip, in comparison to most other places. However when a travelogue comes around which has as much or more content then them, it generally gets as much following as them. Prime example of this is Praveen's travelogue of his ride across India, Bhutan, Nepal and his trek to EBC, which is still the most viewed travelogue in our forum http://www.bcmtouring.com/forum/travelogues-f9/destination-unknown-t9814/

Creating a completely dedicated section for Ladakh, which includes itinerary as as well as travelogues would be a break away from our current forum structure and may even lead to even less viewership of other travelogues, since those interested in Ladakh will just visit one section.

I would strongly urge the authorities on the forum to have a dedicated Ladakh section for all the travelogs, maps, info, plans related to Ladakh in one place.

Some of the popular tourist destinations can also be given separate sections, such as Himachal and Rajasthan.
