You do not need an IDP(International Driving Permit) for short stay. Your India license will do. The following link may help:

Avis / Hertz etc do rent cars on India license but not in all countries....moreover it changes across various states within the country also.
For instance, California accepts Indian license for renting a car,,,,but i faced challenges in LA as they were asking for IDP...!!

Anytime Bharat. Please share this link with them and sort it out. IDP is not even needed in the U.S. to rent a car. I wonder why people in Mauritius asking.

My Two cents (or paisa)-
I tried renting a car in kansas , USA using my indian driving license and rental car companies here refused. The next year, I got a IDP from Chennai RTO office. I went through a license agent. Had to pay 1600 Rs., (fees + agent commision) along with the list of documents mentioned in the earlier post. The RTO officer, took a personal interview and verified if I had a proper valid visa and was formally asking questions as to where I am going and for how long etc.
IDP along with indian driving license is accepted in over 120 countries (If I remember it right). I was able to rent a car in US using that with no issues.

I was once pulled over in UK for "not coming to a complete halt" on a stop sign. When asked for my License, i produced my DL alongwith the IDP booklet.
After going through it, the cop confirmed that i was eligible to legally drive a car in UK for 6 months (Rental or non rental) provided that i have insurance.
I have rented cars in the US numerous times, and my normal DL (card License) has always been sufficient enough. I have never had to produce the IDP booklet.
Although, the normal DL enables you to drive in several countries for a certain time frame, the IDP is an essential little document which can tremendously help out in unforeseen situations.
Also, in order to obtain one, a Valid visa is necessary.

the rto's in most states in india directly or thru' the respective automobile associations are issuing international driving permits valid for all countries & one year !!!
can anyone give the indian government regulation for idp to be issued & wether it is valid for west bengal or wether the west bengal government can have its own additional conditions ???
