iPad 2

You are looking at it in terms of storage device and I am looking at it as a means to do tethered shooting and for reviewing photographs on the spot to ensure that there aren't any misses.

As far as storage space is concerned, a 2.5" external hdd will solve that issue.

Just wondering whether iPad really wins hands down when rivaled against all it's counterparts from other brands.

Every electronic company seems to be rolling out its own version every other week.
Well there is no true scoreboard for that, it all depends on user preference. iPad has got the best tablet screen and UI. But lacks very much in term of features, if you need them. Also with most of the upcoming tablets having 1GB of RAM, iPad has only 512MB, something not really important now, but 6 months from now and new apps will be in the market which would need over 512mb.

Agree to what you are pointing out, but it will turn out to be a lengthy conversation about the feasibility of tethered shooting as time taken to transfer the files to the ipad and review will make you loose out on moments, but otherwise if you are in the middle of the day and shooting landscape or stationary objects...again as i said we can a very informative conversation on this topic, it will be fun..

iPad does not recognize external Hdd as far as i know. Neither can an external hdd transfer files from the camera or a card reader without an OS ( i mean motherboard ), not sure what you mean by saying that it will solve the problem of storage.

And that bigger screen is a big asset for photographers and can easily replace netbooks/laptops, which are generally heavier. Frankly speaking, I too had been thinking about buying one for a while now, to replace my netbook, as it mainly used for surfing at home and on trips.
I was looking for forward to replace my laptop with an ipad/galaxy tab.
Storage space for media files and tools for casual graphics design and photo editing are not suffice.

On the other hand I came across this
Notion Ink Adam: Tech Specs

Seem they have combined a netbook, cell phone with a tablet? Even has USB connectivity and the lot.

Sorry if I sound rude, but do you even know how tethered shooting works and in which scenarios it is used? No one is going to use it for sports photography, it is best used for portraits, landscape and macro work, where at times the camera LCD just isn't enough.

Yes iPad can't natively connect to an external hdd, though it can be jailbraeked to do that. However one needs an external hdd with external power, since iPad wouldn't be able to power that.

Additionally, there are hdd as well as external adapters available in the market, which one can use to read and copy the memory card, without needing a computer! Heck such things were even available for iPod!

What you are looking to replace is a laptop which does the work of a desktop as well, what I essentially needs is an extension to my existing workstation, which I can use during trip and my sis can use to surf the internet. Hence even a Atom based netbook has been enough for us for over one and a half years.

No, not at all. As i said it will be nice to have a discussion on this as I may not know it all, and am willing to get the correct information. So, I googled and found that there are couple of things needed for tethered shooting.

1. Camera that communicates via wifi. Nikon does not (only avialable in their pro body range) , but i read that most of the Canon bodies have this feature.

2. Eye-fi memory card if camera does not communicate via wi-fi.

3. Wi-Fi router - this is needed to create a channel between the camera and the iPad as iPad cannot create a hotspot. ( correct my undersanding on this one, if its wrong)

Still i think this set-up is lighter than carrying a laptop, but the only thing that i dont find satisfying is the high cost of the Eye-Fi card (as i use a nikon :-( )

you are correct on this. now i have a external hdd but it gets power from the same usb cable, guess will just have to get a cable which has two USB connection, so that can get power from other sources

Yes, they are but at a relatively high premium price for all that i could check on

So, now comparing an Atom based netbook to iPad what do you think.

Ok my bad, I just checked and it seems I am wrong, please accept my apology for my earlier incorrect reply.

At present, iPad does not allows the EOS utility to work, which essentially turns your computer/laptop into a remote control (connected through USB cable) and lets you control various shooting parameters and get a live view. I guess a windows based tablet would be a much better option, as long as it has 1024x768 or higher resolution, till then, my netbook rocks! Which in a way is really sad, since the screen of iPad is much-much nicer than any of the netbooks out there.

So, now comparing an Atom based netbook to iPad what do you think.
Yes, because it is essentially targeted at the netbook market. Because who ever needs the screen size and processing power of a full fledged laptop, wouldn't look at iPad as a possible option. However, for travelers like us, who do not always require high processing power or large screens, especially since they come at the expense of weight reduction and batter backup, it is a good enough option.

Flash memory of iPad is also an asset, as it removes the biggest source of failure for a traveler (hdd) out of the equation and thus can be run at higher altitudes (theoretically).

Of course, one can easily buy a netbook with 10 hour claimed back up battery, 10” screen and swap out the mechanical hdd for an SSD, but that solution still isn't going to be as light as an iPad and for bikers packing for long ride, every bit of saving in space and weight is a good thing, especially when you already have your mobile phones, DSLR and lenses, backup cameras, tripods etc. to deal with, apart from the bike spares, tools and cloths.

My younger brother bought the iPad2 a few days back and I simply loved it but, I also used a friends Motorola Xoom and it felt better. Though I am apple aficionado but Xoom felt more practical.

I to am happy with my iPhone :p

Check this out..

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Eee- ASUS Eee Pad Transformer TF101

going to be lauched in India in June 2011.

10 inch IPS screen
9 hr of battery life
Expandable storage
Dual core processor
1GB RAM
USB
Android Honeycomb
Preloaded with Polaris® Office® 3.0
5 mp back camera
1.3 mp front camera
Accelerometer
Gyroscope
In built GPS

And the connectible keyboard which doubles the battery-life and gives 2 more USB port + SD card reader

Without the keyboard and with IPS display its still $100 cheaper than the IPAD2 of same storage capacity.

This is gonna be a killer and I have been an Asus fan already, most reliable motherboard maker. And it beats the Xoom hands-down in every review that i have come across today.
