There is no problem at all.
Folow rules, travel with proper document & license.
Research your destination before starting travel.
Avoid night travel.
Pre-book your stay.
Keep important numbers handy.

Are you non-resident of India? Or Non-Citizen of India?
If yes, then you ought to have International Driving Permit [for the class of the vehicle you wish to drive] issued by the country you hold the Passport.

If you are citizen or resident of India, then you need to first hold the Driving license for the class of the vehicle you intend to drive.

Then follow the steps as listed by @umeshp in addition if you are used to drive in different orientation as seen in Europe of Americas; then you need to get used to Indian Orientation.
