10-Jul-2018 (Tuesday): Day 11 (Leh to Jispa).. magnificent riding day

We wanted to fill the petrol at 6:00 AM as soon as the Indian oil petrol bunk opens and leave Leh. We checked out from the hotel, loaded the luggage and reached the petrol bunk by 6:00. However the attendant had not come and we had to wait for 10-15 minutes. We filled the petrol, reserve cans and left Leh by 6:45 AM.

We saw the boards for Shey palace, Thiksey monastery and Hemis monastery on the way but didn’t stop anywhere. We crossed Karu and stopped at Upshi where we had to enter the details in the check post. We had tea in a stall there.

There is diversion to Chumathang here which leads to Tso Moriri. We continued towards Manali and crossed Taglangla pass. Stopped at a dhabha for breakfast and had Paratha. Continued our journey and passed More plains and stopped at the end of More plains to take few photos. The location was awesome.

We continued the ride and Vinod & I stopped at a location to take pictures. A Ritz car came and stopped by and it was having Karnataka state registration. I had seen that car in Leh when I was filling the Air for my bike on our first day at Leh. I thought it belongs to a military person who has been transferred to Leh. However, there were 2 guys in that car who drove all along from Bangalore to Leh and were going back. They stopped by seeing my bikes registration number. We had conversation and took a selfie and continued our journey

We stopped for lunch. There were couple of buses and students. They were again from Bangalore. We met the Ritz guys there again and thought of sending the cricket bats we had purchased with them to Bangalore if they had space in the car and if they agree for that. They were kind enough and agreed to carry. We took their telephone numbers and told them that we will collect it once they reach Bangalore.

After lunch we continued and crossed Lachungla and Nakeela passes. We reached Sarchu by 5:20 PM. We had Tea there and enquired about next place where we can get the accommodation. The answer was Jispa which is around 85 Kms. We were told that couple of water crossings are there apart from that it is reachable in 3 hours.

We made entry in the check post and crossed the bridge and we had to make entry again in the next immediate check post as we have entered Himachal Pradesh state now. We could see lot many tents in Sarchu. It is a good place to stay but heard that the temperatures will be very low during the nights.

We continued our journey towards Jispa and as we came out of Sarchu, we saw a biker, who probably was staying in one of the tents, trying to do the stunt on the road side and fell. It was a funny moment but we didn’t know if he really got injured. His friend was watching it and we saw him supporting.

We successfully negotiated couple of water crossings and the Barlachla pass. I admit that Barlachla was the beautiful passes out of all the passes I came across in Ladakh region. The timing we reached there also was perfect. It was very cold when we entered there.

I suddenly saw a lake and was admiring the beauty of it. I came across the board mentioning it as Suraj tal. I took couple of photos at the location.

It was getting dark and we were looking for stay options which we didn’t find. It looks like we crossed zing zing bar. We came across couple of more water crossings and they were very dangerous. We even stopped and were checking if we should cross or get down and see the depth etc. A sumo taxi arrived and he said it is not deep and crossed it in a second. We followed them and finally arrived at Darcha.

It was almost 9:20 PM. There were couple of stay options but Jispa was another 5 KMs away and we decided to proceed. We got accommodation in Jispa and stayed there. One thing we noticed is there are absolutely no KM milestone or boards which mention about Jispa all along from Sarchu.

There was parking place behind the hotel for bikes. We kept the bikes and went to the room. It was a single room which can accommodate 4 people. We ordered Veg biryani in the hotel. We had the food and went to bed by 11:30 PM.

Today’s was an excellent riding day with beautiful scene all along. We crossed Taglangla, Lachungla, Nakeela and Barlachla passes. We had crossed Zojilla, Namilkla, Fatula, Khardungla and Changla earlier.

Stay : Hotel at Jispa – Rent 1500 per day per room – accommodates 4

Odo for the day : 349 – Start 15063 and End 15412

Be a Good person but Don't try to Prove.
Awesome Prabhu. Not transporting the bikes from Leh to Chandigarh was a good decision which you will not regret during your lifetime. Your pictures are a testimony to that. Sometimes we are so much fatigued in such treacherous journeys that one or two persons in the group gives up. It was good that all 4 of you rode till the end. Were there any confrontations amongst you during your ride? Generally it happens and is very natural.

Kudos to you & your friends.

No big confrontations but I would say difference of opinion is natural as you said. But we completed the trip as a team.

Thank you !
