rotweiler is a definite no....
i have a cross of Lab with??? but its amazing as a guard dog... makes people stand against the wall and doesnt let em move till told to... She was never trained for this...
Since she is cross bred.. her immunity level is very high and very less prone to diseases...

i also have Two Baan gaddi( Sheep Dogs)..... great great great watch dogs... people are scared to even cross my flat(house)... they are very friendly to people they were aquainted to in childhood... very very sober and gentle... but now the problem is if a stranger knocks your door... and they are let loose .. the dude is a goner...
The two of em' are medium sized, sleepy and sluggish in nature.
Active mostly during food hours or if somebody around the house... can smell animals in the jungle and follow their leads( again never trained, it comes naturally to them)....
Eats: veg food only( meat given rarely)... need lots of lassi to cool down during summers...

Licking: They rarely lick.. maybe Two or three licks in the morning to wake ya up... and they rarely drool...

Try em' out.. they can be a nice option...

In regard to the friendliness of pets.
A dog only gets as friendly to strangers as much you allow em' to be... don't let every passing stranger pet your dog.. that way it knows to keep away from people...

So if you dont wish for alternatives... definitely a lab... cos GSD( pedigree) are very likely to catch diseases especially in legs and joints.. ears.. these dogs due to there pedigree are in some serious trouble... Labs are a great go with kids.. great watch dogs... Also a watch dog is good to the extent of barking at people and letting them know of their presence.

If they(dogs) bite a human.. the owners are registered under criminal suit( and IPC sucks big time..we all know that) i Can say this because i have faced serious complaints from neighbors and one was disposed off in the court .. so don't go for dogs that are eager to bite...

You could also try for retrievers( tha famous lassi) or mid sized Terriers( if you can get a good one)

What's Baan Gaddi? ...& thanks for the info on law suit. :)

A Rottweiler!
as last option...
friendly for family...
unlucky for tress passers
BANNED in many countries...
Just checked its profile... Its even heavier than average Lab. Maybe its too large for my requirement. Moreover it isn't very great with kids. Thanks for the suggestion.

Gaddi is a breed of dogs found generally in hilly areas and known as sheep dogs also. They look very dangerous but in actual aren't all that dangerous. Much depends on their training too. They can be a very good option for a family watchdog but can't withstand heat and humidity. So not a real option for you.

Adopt a Indian street dog.
Loyal, hardy, resistant to disease, and will live to 15 years.
A local breed is always better than foreign ones, so unless you want a status symbol, a couple of desi breeds are best.

i agree with TSK....
Like i said i have one.. and it is super beautiful... had an offer by some adv. co. long back... so u can imagine.. looks totally like a border collie...
About Sheep dogs in warm climates.... The upper mountain regions have extreme climates... they are super hot in summers as the sun is very harsh and super cold in winters....
Sheep dogs need specific diets.. but again problem they are also somewhat of a pedigree line.. as shepherds keep multiples at one time to watch out for sheep.. and they breed amongst themselves... so again immunity problems... infestation...etc...( one of my dogs suffers from fits once every 1-1.5 months and its a real pain watching it at that time...)
but give it a shady place to sit.. lts of lassi..and if possible makki ki roti( they love it) and trust me they are super amazing when it comes to being alert.. they just look utterly sluggish.. and they are beautiful.and;) friendly to the right people.

baan gaddis: they are not like any sheep dog.. come from the more ferocious lot.. and the breed is rarely found... they also do not have very long coats.. a lil more than labs and face hair like those of terriers.. a very unique thing though they are medium sized dogs they have very thin and long, pointed, and very tender tongues.

Nothing
I have a street dog and have always adopted street dogs barring one occasion, it was a female GSD and it passed in 2-3 years.

Aren't female dogs more intelligent than their male counter-parts. I think so. Males are mostly dumb & bite whereas females would bark & scare the shit out of people.

You mean take any puppy from street or are there some breeders for street dogs too? While street dogs so live longer I don't think most of them can be watch dogs as they are too small and appear weaker than Lab/GSD and other similar.
