Hello,

We are a group of 3 people wanting to tour Ladakh around second week of April for about 5 days. We will get a flight to Leh/Ladakh and we want help in planning what are our best options on the days we have there. We would like to rent some bikes and travel around on that if possible and our main aim is to visit scenic places like the Nubra valley. So please advice on a suitable itinerary and good places to stay during our time. Also one of us from the group is a an Overseas Citizen of India from England so does he need any extra permissions etc.
Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Abin Jose

April is offseason and still pretty cold. Add to that, high altitude passes can have plenty of snow and ice on the road. So unless you’re experienced in riding in those sorts of condition, my suggestion would be to hire motorcycles for local sightseeing and taxi for Nubra and Pangong.

As far as itinerary goes, you can try something like this:

Day 1: Arrive in Leh and rest, if feeling alright, walk to the main market.

Day 2: Get the inner line permit for Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso made through a travel agent (OCI need to go through travel agents for a permit and they will also get the permit for you as well.) You can cover the Sham Valley circuit today (Hall of Fame, Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Indus and Zanskar Confluence and Alchi and Basgo Monasteries.)

Day 3: Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La and back. Around 12-hour journey so start early.

Day 4: Leh to Pangong Tso via Chang La and back. Around 12-hour journey so start early.

Day 5: Leh local sightseeing and buffer day.

In case of Leh, stay at Hotel Tso Kar, Panorama or Omsila. All are centrally heated and comfortable.

For taxi and motorcycle, you can contact Inder (+919906971501).

Do read up on Ladakh AMS Survival Guide before doing anything.

Thank you so much this is really helpful. Because it is offseason can we book the hotels on the day or is it better to book it in advance? Also for the above itinerary is it possible to know an approximate cost? Thanks again.

OCI may need different permissions, not sure. @Yogesh Sarkar would know.
Visitng Nubra and Pangong on motorcycle in April - DONT.
Taxi Cost for these should be around 10k for each, nubra and pangong. Ask for off season discount too ~ 20-25%.

Cost varies based on a lot of factors. Expect to shell out around 16k for taxi to Nubra and Pangong. 1.2k per motorcycle per day plus fuel. Centrally heated hotels are generally around 3k on twin sharing basis. Food can be a little expensive at around 300-400 per person per day for basic affair.

You can book hotel after arriving at Leh.

Awesome. Thank you guys. One last question, is the inner line permit something which needs to be applied in advance and takes time to be approved or is it something you can get on the day?
