Hi Chandan,

I had stayed in Hotel Centerpoint in Srinagar which is a good choice. It is not too costly either. In Kargil I had stayed in an army accommodation so I have not done much research on accommodations there.

Armageddon

As we bade farewell to Pangong Tso, the hope was for a quick and smooth journey through the mighty Changla so that we could go to Tso Moriri that evening.

The skies seemed to be calm and that boded well for our journey.

The sand dunes besdides the roads reminded us of Nubra Valley

1-Dunes.jpg

And sometimes they were on the road as well

2-DunesRoads.jpg

The overnight snowfall led to beautiful vistas

3-BlueSkies.jpg

Beautiful roads led us towards our destination but they also made us stop time and again

4-Roads.jpg

A six images panorama

5-Changthang_Panorama.jpg

5-Roads.jpg

As we moved on the grasslands were covered with sprinkling of snow. Such beauty everywhere! Really "Mera Bharat Mahaan". Even now I look at this while I write and I my heart leaps out with joy!!

6-SnowGrass.jpg

7-SnowGrass.jpg

Yet another panorama!

8-GrasslandPanorama.jpg

The Kiangs gave us company as well

9-Kiangs.jpg

And yet another pit stop. The snow had given way to water. And the snow clad mountains reflected in the water. As a landscape photographer the Changthang area deserves a day for itself!

9-ReflectionPanorama.jpg

10-ReflectionCloseup.jpg

And a winding road along side

11-Road.jpg

And Sudhakar, yes marmots too :)
12-Marmot.jpg

And wild horses

12-WildHorse.jpg

And the road led us to a dream valley. Basking in light with greens, yellows, whites, browns and blues. As if saying "Come my friend. Leave everything aside and settle down in this paradise"

14-Green-Valley.jpg

15-RoadtoValley.jpg

But as J.R.R. Tolkien said The Road Goes Ever And Ever On!

And with eager feet we followed the road....to this patch of paradise.

I have tried to capture this through a 9 shot panorama

16-Reflections.jpg

And the road beckoned! We must go to Changla!

17-ToChangla.jpg

Some Chukars along the way made us stop

18-Chukar.jpg

And the light played hide and seek on the valley below

19-LightsValley.jpg

The road wound through the mountains. A 12 shot panorama...

20-MountainRoadsPanorama.jpg

And the signboards asked us to stop again!

21-EnjoyTheView.jpg

But we had many bridges to cross

22-GreenBridge.jpg

And mountains to climb

23-TowardsTsotsok.jpg

We moved towards Tsolstok as the roads wound through the snow clad mountains

24-IcedRoads.jpg

And camps appeared in places one would not even imagine

25-Camp.jpg

Blue skies and snow followed us everywhere

26-SnowSnow.jpg
27-BlueSkies.jpg

And snow covered the roads. The signs were ominous.

28-RoadsOrSnow.jpg
29-Heaven.jpg

30-Tsolstok.jpg

Finally we reached Tsolstok where warm tea greeted us. And interesting birds as well.

A horned lark

31-HornedLark.jpg

And a Robin Accentor
31-RobinAccentor.jpg

A convoy shod with chains waited to climb Changla. And we had none!

32-Convoy.jpg

But IN STANZIN WE TRUST!

We moved ahead from the checkpost.

33-FromTsolstok.jpg

Changla called us! The roads were very treacherous and we followed vehicles ahead. Moving through the tracks created by them.

34-TowardsChangla.jpg

It was snowing heavily all along and we rode into a storm!!!

35-IntoTheStorm.jpg

Some vehicles due to their conditions or the inexperience of the drivers got stuck in the snow. The traffic slowed down or stopped due to this. And all drivers got down to help.

36-StuckInSnow.jpg

One curious thing was that none of the drivers wore a cap! When Stanzin came back his hair was full of white snow.

And finally we were at Changla.

37-WhiteChangla.jpg

A quick pit stop and we were on our way greeted by a long queue.

38-Queue.jpg

And once in a while the kids make unique images. This was taken by Avni.

39-AvniTruck.jpg

If the road behind was arduous then the road ahead was even more challenging. A blizzard awaited us!!

40-Blizzard.jpg

As we waited here our car was shaking due to the strong winds and snow. This was truly Armageddon

And amidst all this chaos were our saviours. Armed with their shovels they walked on the roads. Clearing it all while the heavens poured snow and blew wind all over.

41-TheSaviours.jpg

We saluted them as we drove past them. The snow still continued unabated.

42-Armageddon.jpg

Gradually step by step we climbed down the mountains..until the whites disappeared and greens appeared.

42-Sakthi.jpg

And finally we reached Karu at 4. A decision was taken not to take the turn towards Tso Moriri and go to Leh instead. :-x:-x:-x

Well Tso Moriri there is always next time....

I did consider making a day trip the next day but the place deserves more time. Finally we booked Hotel Lingzi for one more day and decided to rest for a day. And obviously do shopping :)

P.S.: Apologies for so many images in one post but it seemed logical to have them in this story line.
