Through Frozen Land
---------------------

A hot water stream makes its path through frozen land at Strokkur Geysir in Iceland

The Strokkur Geysir is a popular spot on the Iceland tourist circuit. It is crowded pretty much year around including in the winter despite the cold.

When I visited, instead of just photographing the erupting Geysir, I ventured a little away from the crowd to see if I could find something different. I followed this stream flowing through the snowy landscape. The going was tough as the ground was slippery in some places. After a couple of slippery misses, I wasn’t feeling very adventurous and decided to turn back.

As I was turning, the sun peeped out through the clouds, illuminating the far off mountains as well as patches of brown grass which peeped above the snow. The picture does little justice to the mesmerizing landscape of white pierced by patches of brown engulfed with steam coming out of the land.

A lonely bench sits covered with snow with no takers amidst an abstract of trees and falling snow near Strokkur Geysir in Iceland

Given the weather, there were no takers for these benches. They stood alone waiting for better weather return.

Neon
------

A brightly lit houseboat on the Dal Lake at Srinagar

Srinagar is always beautiful. I have been fortunate to ride there twice at different times of the year. This time I also ended up staying on a houseboat and taking a boat ride on the Lake at dusk.

This picture was taken towards the end of the day when it was mostly dark. The houseboat’s were well lit, some garishly though eye catching as this one. Reminded me of the neon signs of Las Vegas.

The dancing reflections on the water were a different thing all together. The pinks and the purples along with the blues and yellows all danced in rhythm ignoring the sensory assault the actual lights were having on ones senses.

Herding Sheep
-----------------

Sheep getting herded together to be taken out for grazing in the mountains.

The eastern side of Panchachuli, i.e., Darma Valley is still untouched territory mostly for hiking parties. Till recently there was no road and it required a multi day trek from Tawaghat to get there. The few villages in the area are remote and most residents depart for lower grounds in winter due to the harsh climate.

This picture was taken at the village house in Dantu where I spent two nights. During the day I hung around the village observing the few people going on with their difficult daily life. I even tried to help gathering the sheep, but probably got in the way of their work.

The person bent down in the back is the owner, and the young girl in the front is his eldest daughter. She was the one mostly in-charge of the sheep.
