MSRTC launches AC sleepers, spruces up ordinary red buses
Somit Sen| TNN | Jan 21, 2018, 05:50 IST

MUMBAI: The state transport agency, MSRTC, launched its first-ever AC sleeper bus at Mumbai Central ST bus depoton Friday. It also introduced a revamped red ST bus, often referred to as the 'lal dabba' with aerodynamic design. The fare will continue to be Rs 6 a ticket for a 6-km distance-.TOI was the first to report that the AC sleeper bus was to be introduced on Saturday.
The AC sleeper will have a capacity of 30 passengers (sleeping cabins) and it will have facilities that exist in Shiv Shahi buses which are a part of MSRTC's fleet. The buses will have better suspension, Wi-Fi, GPS, two CCTV surveillance cameras and an SOS button for passengers. While the bus routes are still to be finalised, officials said that they will ply to destinations that require overnight travel.

The launch was held to commemorate the birth anniversary of late founder of Shiv Sena, Bal Thackeray, on Tuesday. The MSRTC plans to launch 100 such AC sleepers in the first phase, by the end of this year. The plan is to introduce a total of 500 AC sleeper buses across the state in a few years. Most of these buses will also ply to destinations in other states — Goa, Bengaluru, and Udaipur besides other places, officials said.

State transport minister Diwakar Roate said that the MSRTC will also introduce non-AC sleeper buses. These buses will be introduced as 'Raat Rani' buses which will ply across the state.

The revamped ST bus will be named 'Lal Pari'. "The first look is impressive," said Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray at the launch event. "You get a feeling that it is a private luxury bus and I am sure this will be a hit with commuters."
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who inaugurated the two new buses with Thackeray, said that the common man needs a "comfortable" ride. "The Lal Pari will be a dream come true for the common man who will get a bus with good interiors, design and luxury at an affordable rate. It is a big gift by MSRTC to commuters," he said.

He added that 15 new bus ports will come up soon in the state. A bus port refers to a multi-modal hub where state buses, local buses and Metro trains converge. One such bus port is proposed to come up in Panvel while another is likely to come up in Pune.
Fadnavis said that a proposal by transport minister Diwakar Raote to introduce a mini-theatre to screen Marathi films at bus depots was a good one. "At bus stations, people have to wait, sometimes for 2 to 3 hours. They can spend time watching a Marathi film," he said.

I waiting for them to enter the Bengaluru route. Although the present Shivshahi pricing seems great, I hope they get it right for the sleepers too.

They must try present Mumbai-Bangalore service but the tough player is ksrtc in this most competitive route. As comparison they have multiaxle with three drivers msrtc will halt for a crew change which takes longer time to reach the destination.

It is absurd to know the MSRTC timings for Shivasahi on Hyderabad - Nagpur route. Did not understand keeping in mind which traveller the bus service is launched!
  1. Hyderabad departure: 6PM, Nagpur reaching 5 AM
  2. Nagpur departure: 3 PM and Hyderabad reaching 1:45 AM.
How will one get the seat occupancy?

Been away from travelling by bus since last 8 to 9 months or so since I am myself driving down to places far and wide atleast once in a month. However I am aware of all the developments happening around when it comes to buses. The biggest sensation in Maharashtra at present is the launching spree of MSRTC SHIVSHAHI AC buses on various routes across the length and breadth of the state and what I am constantly acknowledging is that they have been able to garner a huge success on whichever route they are deploying these buses. Almost once in every 3 days, since last 6 months, a Shivshahi gets a new route to ply in Maharashtra. What more, most routes usually get atleast 2 Shivshahi schedules - one for the day and another night. Some routes have multiple schedules ( 20+ ) running through the day -> highest being Pune--Nasik (45 ) followed by Pune--Kolhapur (30) , Pune--Sangli and Pune--Solapur in that order. If I get down to list all the current routes of Shivshahi in Maharashtra, it might take atleast 2 hours to scan and pen it down here. Pune, undoubtedly remains the hub of Shivshahi buses in MH, with 90% buses plying to and from Pune. Each and every major city of Maharashtra is presently connected to Pune by atleast 1 AC Shivshahi schedule per day ( many have multiple schedules as well ). Mumbai too has been connected but far lesser as compared to Pune, however in coming days, many new routes are expected to get launched as MSRTC plans to induct a whopping 2000 AC Shivshahi buses in the next 6 months or so. Most of these will be sourced by private operators though.

Five of the interstate routes where Shivshahi AC buses are running presently are-
1. Nanded--Hyderabad ( 6 schedules per day )
2. Nagpur--Hyderabad ( 1 schedule per day )
3. Ambejogai--Hyderabad ( 2 schedules per day )
4. Pune--Panjim ( 5 schedules per day )
5. Kolhapur--Hyderabad ( 1 night schedule launched today ).

All the buses running presently are semisleeper 2*2 versions, however MSRTC reportedly has already procured a couple of AC sleepers and the grand launch of the same on interstate and intrastate routes is eagerly awaited. MSRTC is finally doing a commendable job and I wish them a huge success in all their endeavours.

Kolhapur-Hyderabad is not showing yet.
As explained above, Nagpur hyderabad has erratic timings.
