Don't even try to play with AMS issues as it can be serious for someone with co travellers, if not you.
Even if you have to use Plan B via Manali try to stay in hills before Manali for 1 night and next night at Jispa and then move to Leh and keep eye on news of route open closure. Manali may be having good rush during weekends. If you are there then avoid Manlai and stay at Kullu or ahead of Manali only.
You may have to move to Leh earlier and can spend 1 night only at hills of Himachal Pradesh then keep 2 days & night at Leh for rest.
Yes, during whole journey we shall be taking halts in majorly famous cities and before reaching or Manali / Srinagar too to acclimatise.
Since our co-travellers/Pilots/Navigators are female so definitely sufficient journey breaks have to taken to keep them healthy.

Srinagar to Leh- road condition is better compared to Manali to Leh. Hotel options are better too.

Manali to Leh is more scenic and adventurous.

Only planning is required between Srinagar to Leh, vice versa and Manali to Leh, vice versa.

I drove Leh to Srinagar in one day while returning in 2016.

Manali to Leh in 2 days onwards journey time in 2017 and same while returning.

Carry some backup fuel and tire repairing kit and you will be fine.

All the very best!!

Thanks !
We are still in dilemma finalising route (via Manali or Via Srinagar) but getting recommendations from you all probably we shall prefer Route A- via Srinagar.
Yes, we have ordered puncture kit online hope that will serve the purpose (in case needed) and one jerry can of 20 ltrs already we have.

Thanks again !

Monsoon may be ending but for hills, monsoon ever ends.
Last year September was monsoon month only with good rainfall in hills..
Something or the other disturbance comes and it may rain heavily.
Stick to main highways and keep eye on news.
For plains heavy rains are not much trouble creators.
But for hills you have to be cautious.

Monsoon effects can bother you at Jammu to Srinagar stretch most and then at Zozila Pass.
After that monsoon effect will be less.

For Manali side Monsoon effect can create havoc and can be dangerous at times at some places after Jispa in Himachal Pradesh as seen in earlier years.
Manali to Jispa is easy via Rohtang tunnel / not pass.
Bilaspur to Manali may be tricky as road construction work is going on and it can cause delay at places in daytime.

I can update 4-5 days ago only about weather conditions of areas coming in your way.
You can check BBC Weather and google weather for coming cities / areas or IMD predictions for states in North India.

I also like greenery in plains and prefer green routes better than normal routes.
Greenery will be good in plains and hills too.
But no greenery at Ladakh's higher passes.
LOL !

Thanks for such a detailed suggestions/advices.

Yes, we all have to be very cautious while driving in mountains in that weather specially, first we need to be healthy I mean fit enough to experience that unpredictable climate secondly driving first time in such terrain.

We are very excited as this will be our first ever long journey by self driven car to a dream destination and back via several other attractions/Cities, which will be approximately 8000 kms total.
Specially for this dreamt trip we bought a new car Maruti’ latest launched “GRAND VITARA” whose long driving reviews are yet to submit, hopefully will be able to put once this trip is successfully completed.
However we will be seeking advices regularly from all of you for this trip.

Thanks !

Then which period is recommended particularly between July to Sept ?
Late September or October also can be risky as snowfall or drop in temperatures make us uncomfortable..,
If September month is okay then we can delay our start from Goa and will try to be in mountains in Mid-Sept.
Keep your time same.
Don't change if routes are fine.
Monsoon is best time but keep eye on news.
Main Routes in hills get priority and they try to open it at most priority.
Don't try new route unless there is some issue in hills.
Monsoon is not effective in Ladakh Region.
Other places are ok.
Late September may get dry if monsoon comes early & vice versa.
Mid September of 2014 has seen flood in Srinagar.
Beware of such news.

Mediocre me
Take breaks.
But zero need to aclemetize till manali or even atal tunnel. We were 7 days in manaly on christmas with kid and only thing which was an issue was dryness, not even cold.

Also, many home stay have opened in sissu and nearby now. I would rather do halt there than manali. But women may not like homestay
