When I first started I vowed against editing, would just crop and things like that, then I realised that there really is no substitute for editing, after seeing an amateur cousin of mine go full-fledged pro I realised that in today's world it's all about editing :(
.....
Haha, same same here!

Then it dawns on you that a picture is only as good as the viewers think it is.
And viewers seem to have a weakness for heavily edited/processed stuff!
And the standard line is,"That's how my eyes saw it"!

.....
But Editing was a norm in the past too,it is not a new phenomena....
Hardly, Masterji!
It was a kind of 'touching up' done at the 'professional' level by the Photo Studios where you got the film rolls developed and printed.
And it was this ability that was also factored in when people assigned ratings to studios like Mahattas etc.
Some specialized in portraits for matrimonial requirements and others specialized in touching up landscapes.

The lay user did not have the means to do any post processing the way everybody can do, and is wantonly doing (!), nowadays. :)

That said, I do think film photos did not require the kind of post processing that today's digital pics seem to need.

Best Software - Adobe Photoshop (For Adobe Photoshop you need a good system configuration (Processor and Ram)).
Easy Software - Google picasa
For HDR photo - Photomatrix

Apart from Photoshop CS5, I also use Photoscape which is free and handy. Easy to use and with all the basic 'touching up ' needed for day to day needs. However, RAW processing and wotking on layers etc. you still need Photoshop. Even though Adobe brought out Lightroom as a cheaper alternative especially for photographers, it lacked some features I needed.

Why didn't anyone recommend Lightroom? It costs ₹ 9,727**; less than any prime lens :) Lightroom's learning curve is not as steep as Photoshop, and if you want to edit pictures, not create or manipulate them, Lightroom is the best option. It is good for managing your picture collection, and edit them.

I would like to suggest GIMP for 2nd position. It's free and can work on layers.
