Usually a Lansdowne log will have a nice ride, lovely green mountains, mist, Tiffin tops, temples, town and what not. But here is a story minus all the goodies offered by Lansdowne. This was one of the pre phantom days trips which we undertook in Blue Hyundai i10.

This is one my old travel story which I undertook on a fine Christmas afternoon with my friends Papa, Raka and two young cousins of Papa – Dhruv and Dhawal. Papa called me up to go for a long drive and we decided to leave for Lansdowne immediately. We all gathered at Papa’s South Delhi house and left around 2.00 pm. Joking and chatting the Kafila marched on. While around Meerut, we asked for directions from a Chicha Jaan on a cycle and he almost died of shock and showed his disbelief that how in the world we are in Meerut and going to Lansdowne. Eventually he led us on to the right path. He looked and had an accent akin to Soorma Bhopali. For rest of the journey it was a source of amusement.

it was all dark by the time we reached Kotdwar

We had light refreshment in Meerut. By the time we reached Kotdwar, the sun had already set in. But we decided to keep moving. As we ascended on the mountains amidst the forest it was drop dead dark and not a single thing in sight. It was a December night and it was getting cold. Most of passengers in the car were scared to death, as all observed pin drop silence. We saw a shanty with a fire lit for warmth and stopped for tea. Some tea and fire cheered up the boys. After our fill of tea and gossips we move further ahead. Light reflectors in the dark environs were pleasing as well as reassuring to some extent.

After our fill of tea and gossips we move further ahead. Light reflectors in the dark environs were pleasing as well as reassuring to some extent. Roads were excellent all the way. We reached Lansdowne by 10.30 pm with all hotels closed or on the verge of closing. All the hotel rooms were occupied and that stumped us and we were left in the lurch. The restaurants were also closed with no food available for us. We picked up some bread and butter though. We started hunted for some place to stay overnight. One of the hotel manager took us to a under construction godown or a kind of big hall in the down town where he made a stop gap arrangement for few travellers like us who are in habit of arriving unannounced and no bookings. There were no beds and he provided us a cot, quilt and the damn cold floor to savour. Half an hour of the cold floor and we were all up in arms. We all came out in the open sky and tried to lit fire. Dhruv and Dhawal searched for dry wood and brought loads of them. We enjoyed bon-fire for rest of the night, chatting and toasting the bread over the raging fire. With the day break we readied ourselves to leave for Delhi. At the foothills we came down to the stream and freshened up. Spent some time by the stream and thereafter had a heavy breakfast at Kotdwar. Thereafter it was all the same monotonous roads leading us back to civilization.

we were welcomed into the town by these poor creatures with whom we shared the same plight
