Although i had heard of Pazhassi raja it was a chance reading of an article about him that immediately kindled a flame. i did some research in the internet and was floored by the exploits of the legendary leader in fighting Tipu sultan and later the British.
    BIRTH -
Born as Kerala Varma, into the royal family of KOTTAYAM (not to be mistaken with the southern district of Kottayam, Kerala ). He was the fourth in line of succession to be the king, on 3-1-1753.Also called as Pychy Raja/ Cotiote Raja he is credited to be one of the first freedom fighters of our country. He has been given the title of Kerala Simham ( lion of Kerala ) in recognition of
his martial exploits[IMG]. for more details here is a link

we rode at a leisurely pace as the distance was only about 140 kms. we had a stop just before iritty as suresh wanted a smoke and we had aching groin and legs. next stop was just at the beginning of the Periya hairpins for breakfast. we had hot tea and hot crispy pathiri and egg roast. then on wards the the road condition started deteriorating. initially it was a mixture of good tarmac and potholes then it was no roads at many places. but the greenery and the cool climate was the icing. enjoyed the twisties and the off roading. there were many trucks and four wheelers on the road and had to wait patiently for the chance to overtake when the coast was clear.

we reached mananthavadi by 10.30 am. the memorial is right in the centre of town, behind the district hopital. since it was the death anniversary of the raja the memorial was all decorated and there was a huge crowd. the entry to the memorial was made free on the occassion. we were given ginger coffee at the gate by some ladies. there was a procession being expected which had begun a couple of kilometres away. there were lots of visitors & police men too. saw some members of the commandos of the kerala police too in camoflage attire with automatic rifles.

there is a small museum there which contain exibits related to the lives of the people of the Wayanad district, the weapons and tools used by the raja and his tribal warriors. some documents related to the raja's struggle against the British east india company is also there. it relates to the bounty announced by them for the raja's capture, the trial of some of his Leutenants etc. the sad part is that camera isn't allowed inside
