Please help with Delhi - Kashmir - Leh - Manali Itinerary

Hi guys,

My friend and I are riding to Leh and back from Delhi. I have traveled to North India only once before, therefore, please have a look at our itinerary and let us know if it is feasible.

The main objective is to experience the bike ride itself, and we are planning to come again & again in the coming years. We would be renting a Duke 200 and Pulsar 200NS. Here is the itinerary

  • Day 1 - July 13th - Thursday
    • We are landing in Delhi at 10 a.m. We plan to leave Delhi at 1 pm after completing all the renting formalities and setting up the bike for the ride
    • Reach Amritsar by 10 pm. Stay overnight
  • Day 2 - July 14th - Friday
    • Spend the whole day in Amritsar
  • Day 3 - July 15th - Saturday
    • Amritsar - Dera Baba Nanak - Pathankot - Jammu
    • Stop at Jammu for Lunch
    • Jammu to Patnitop / Batote. Stay for the night
  • Day 4 - July 16th - Sunday
    • Patnitop - Sonamarg via Srinagar (No stopover at Srinagar because of the unrest)
    • I am confused here, can Patnitop to Drass/Kargil be done in the same day?
  • Day 5 - July 17th - Monday
    • Sonamarg/Drass/Kargil - Leh
    • Can Sonamarg - Leh be done a day?
  • Day 6 - July 18th - Tuesday
    • Leh - (Itinerary not decided)
  • Day 7 - July 19th - Wednesday
    • Leh - (Itinerary not decided)
  • Day 8 - July 20th - Thursday
    • Leh - Jispa / Keylong. Is this a stretch?
    • What permits do we need to take for Leh - Manali route? (I understand that permits are for Manali - Leh)
  • Day 9 - July 21st - Friday
    • Jispa / Keylong - Manali
    • Stayover at Manali
  • Day 10 - July 22nd - Saturday
    • Manali - Chandigarh or Delhi
    • Stayover at Chandigarh or Delhi
  • Day 11 - July 23rd - Sunday
    • If staying over at Chandigarh, then Chandigarh - Delhi
    • Flyout to Bangalore at night
I understand that extra 3-4 days would have been good, but we do not have the luxury of time this year. Would be exploring these routes in the coming years.

Please have a look and advice us if any corrections are to be made

Sorry to say this, but it seems like you’re just riding to Ladakh for the sake of knocking it off of a checklist. My suggestion would be to either focus on Kashmir and do a bit of Himachal with it or focus on Ladakh entirely. In which case, 11 days can cover the basic tourist circuit fairly easily.

Seems like you just want to start from jammu / sonmarg and reach manali somehow. Srinagar is upset these days so take care. Roads till Manali are good except few kms near sundarnagar and kullu manali road is being widened but still good. Try to get few more days else limit ur trip to selected areas dont try to explore everything , which will not be practically possible but will be only like putting up a pin on the map

Manali to solang and rohtang are also gud and open as off now

Refer to picture for distances from manali
