If going tommorow, rain may have created landslides etc. Keep eye on news and ask local taxi or bus driver for better route. Else you can proceed from anywhere if going after 2-3 days. Shimla traffic is much more, cross it before peak hours.

Going through shimla (victory tunnel-lakkad bazaar route) is actually recommended as bypass is no more a bypass now a days. However you need to cross during non peak hours otherwise both shimla and bypass gets choked....

Planning to drive to Shimla (Hotel peterhoff) around 21-22 Dec. Weather reports indicate snowfall in hills during that time. Should I take volvo or own car will be fine? I have hill driving experience but never drove during/ after snowfall.

Also, is the road upto Peterhoff ok for driving ...which route should we take after entering Shimla?

Thanks in advance guys..

You have made your own thread here:
.

Your hotel is right place to call and ask about road conditions for Shimla.
If not comfortable, don't take own car.

Weather now as I can see indicating no Snowfall on Saturday or Sunday.
But it can happen on Thursday and more on Friday.
It can be dangerous if snow does not melt away in low temperatures.
However if you take your own car then should take a plastic rope as consumable to work as snow chain for small stretches.

Thanks for reply sir

I think I will not venture out in car within Shimla city. Forecasts do indicate snow on Fri & Sat. Maybe i can prepone plan to thurs...reaching before snowfall foreast. Can you guide me about the status of Kalka - Shimla highway now i.e. does it have too many bad construction patches?

Thanks.

During bad weather it is still not stable.
Kalka Shimla highway will take some more years to become stable. They are doing their job but still it is dangerous during bad weather.
You can go on Bus if going to Shimla only. I will not take any personal vehicle if going at such crowded place.
Use local transport for City roaming. This will be better and convenient too.

Check weather on BBC weather and animation of clouds. Then match it with local weather forecast by imd or AccuWeather.com

Thanks Sir...

Forecast showing snowfall on Fri-Sat .... I think I will drive till hotel & use local transport after that.

Is there any issue during snowfall with new cars..i.e. ... starting problem after being parked for a day or two etc? I have driven 11K kms so far only, so no issues with battery....

Keep car engine covered or in covered parking space. Locals can guide better.
In Spiti they cover bonnet with blanket. But hotel may have covered parking space.
New cars are good with battery.
