Road Trip to Amazing Tawang

Very nice.

Please add a logistics section giving contact details of hotels etc.

What was the reaction of the car rental agency?

Tawang circuit is very well developed. But, north-east India remains largely unexplored to the larger section of Indians. If you are not looking for shopping malls, ice cream parlours, partying crowd, if you don't have complaints about being the only tourists around, if you choose the right season, if you can bear the back-aching long journey, then it will never dishearten you.

Looking forward to reports of many more similar journeys.
Sure and thank for your encouraging words.

We had a heated argument with car rental agency. It seems that they do not have their own fleet. They hire the same from private individuals and then in turn give it on rent to people like us. So they were not ready to take responsibility for any safety related issue. In my opinion, this is unacceptable. We demanded partial refund of the rent paid by us. But they refunded only the deposit amount. I guess, they also had to spend some amount from their pocket to get the car down from the hills.

They charged us Rs. 24500/- for 9 days. I guess, Innova forslef driving would be available @ Rs. 2500/- day. So they overcharged us Rs. 2000/-. I was aware about that from the beginning but had no other option. We booked the car at the last moment and only they were offering Innova. We had to take Innova because we were 8-member team.

I am not sure whether I can name the rental agency here and that's why not taking their name. When I searched in Google, I found three agencies in Guwahati (other than Zoom Car) which give car in rent for self-driving. As per customers' feedback, their ranking was lowest. But I had to go with them because of the reason stated above. They also provide bike in rent and it seems bike customers are happy.

Our total fuel bill was ~ Rs. 8,300.

So far, I can recall, we did not have to pay any toll anywhere.

For Tawang to Bumla and Sangetsar Lake, the local driver charged Rs. 5000/- all inclusive though we finally could not go to Sangetsar Lake. Had we booked for Sangetsar Lake only, it would have costed us Rs. 3,000/-. PT Taso Lake is on the way and therefore automatically gets included in the package.

Accommodation:

Bomdila
: I did not take any noting. Since Bomdila has many hotels, you can go there without any pre-booking

Tawang : We stayed first 2 days at Hotel Menda-La Fooding & Lodging (82579 61910). We took 2 triple bed room and 1 double bed room. For the triple bedrooms, they charged Rs. 1,700/- per day and for double bed room they charged Rs. 1,500/- per day. Food there is bit expensive.

We stayed at Hotel White House (84020 41966) for next 2 days. We took 4 double bed rooms there for two days. For each double bed room , they charge Rs. 1,500/- day including breakfast. In breakfast, they offer limited items but it was useful and effective. Lunch/Dinner rate is quite reasonable, Rs.80/- per Thali.

Among both the hotels, I prefer White House because of the view it offers and quality of the room. In addition it is easily accessible from the Highway and bit outside the market
and therefore relatively peaceful.

Since Tawang has a number of hotels, you can go there without any pre-booking. There are multiple eating options in Tawang Market.

Dirang : In Dirang, we stayed at Hotel Snow Lion (84149 95556). We took, 2 triple rooms and 1 double room there. All the rooms were on the 1st floor and front facing. They charged an overall amount of Rs. 8,800 on a room only basis. There, room rate varies as per floor and facing. Food there is bit expensive. It seems that they encourage having food at hotel.

Since Dirang does not have many hotels, it is better to go there with pre-booking. There is Hotel Pemaling (82589 19962). I first tried this hotel over the phone but room was not available. It is just before entry of Dirang almost at a km away from the main market centre at the Bomdial side. Since it is not in the market and on the highway, in my opinion, it offers best view among all Dirang Hotels provided you get value facing room.

There is hotel Samdup Khang. This is just beside of Hotel Snow Lion. It does not offer any view it seems. Since, I did not try there, I do not have their phone number.

The most expensive hotel at Dirang is Hotel Norphel Retreat. At the time of our travel, they were charging Rs. 4000 per double bed room. It is on the opposite of the Dirang river on the elevated river bed. Since it is very near to the Dirang River and has a lot of open land surrounding it, it definitely offers pleasant staying experience. But it is quite of from Dirang market and it would be really difficult to access market from there in the dark.

While roaming in Dirang, I noticed Hotel Diarng Resort : [email protected]; [email protected].

While travelling in Sangti valley, I saw a board of a homestay 'Lanjom Homestay' ( 82588 27576/ 094362 25154)

I hope fellow BCMTians will find this information helpful. Please feel free to PM me if you need any other information.

Thanks!!!!

Of course you can, and you should. The difference of such a forum from a travel magazine is that here people share their first hand experience, and this authentic reporting helps the future travellers in taking decision.

Do the hotels provide room heaters?

@santanu It's your thread - please reply to all the questions posted here. ;)
Sorry Boss. Please do not get angry with me. After posting my last reply, I started for Lonavala and now enjoying rains at Lonavala. The fact is that without encouragement of yours and that of Tapas, I could not have finished my travelogue. Thanks to both of you.

The car rental agency is 'Awe Rides'. Now, I jokingly call them 'Awful Rides'.

The hotels do provide room heaters but the same is not included in the rate mentioned by me in my previous reply. They charge Rs. 300/- extra for the same.

Zemithang can be visited by non-Tawng vehicle. We went to Zemithang next day using our own vehicle, details of which I will post later.

There are two routes for Zemithang, one via Lumla and another via Sangetsar Lake.

Root 1 : Via Lumla

Root 2 : Via Y-Junction, Sangetsar Lake and T-Gompa

We went via Lumla and did not face any problem. If you try to go via Sangetsar Lake, you may face some problem from the local vehicle drivers/owners.

Another option, which you may consider (on which we did not work throughly because of our foolishness) is to going to Zemithang via Lumla and coming back via Sangetsar Lake, thus completing the full circuit either in a single day or with a night stay at Zemithang. In this oprion, since you will be approaching Sangetsar Lake from Zemithang, there will be no one to object. But what I have heard is that Zemithang-T Gompa Sangetsar Lake stretch is very bad and army vehicles ply on that stretch very infrequently. Therefore, if there is any problem in your vehicle on that stretch, it would be difficult to get help.

Theoretically, even Bumla can be accessed by own vehicle but local taxi union do obstruct going to Bumla and Sangetsar Lake from Tawang using own vehicles.

Pass is required only for Bumla. No pass is required for Sangetsar Lake or Zemithang. However, when we are going to Zemithang, at a check post just before Zemithang, army personnel kept my identity cards. In all probability, they did it to ensure we comeback to Tawng via Lumla only and do not try T Gompa - Sangetsar Lake - Y Junction route because it was 3 pm already. While returning, they gave back my identity cards.
I was thinking of doing the 3rd route.. i.e reach zemithang via lumla and then comeback via madhuri lake. But i heard army doesn't allow also the local taxi union puts Rs5000/- fine near the exit to Tawang. Just to get an idea how strict they are I thought of booking local taxi to BumLa first and then decide whether next day i take same route while returning from zemithang. But i found they are really strict on that and i saw a non Arunachal vehicles owner was negotiating with them. So i dropped the idea and decided to take lumla route in the return trip also. However I couldn't make it zemithang next day as the roads were closed due to bridge repairing activity till 4pm i.e somewhere 20km before lumla and we decided to go back to Tawang.

The perennial problems on Tawang route are, (i) drunken drivers, which you eliminated by self-driving and (ii) bad condition of the tyres. It was surprising that both the tyres got punctured.

Although it is evident from your writing, but still would like to have a confirmation : you took the right road by taking the left turn after Mandala pass, correct?
That turn is little tricky... The road which is in perfect condition takes u to Bhutan border.. And there is a kaccha road towards the left goes to morshing. From that junction till 25kms roads were pretty bad and almost kaccha road.

Hmmm..... then how can someone reach T-Gompha?
