Lovely. Tawang has been on my to do list for quite sometime. And it seems April onwards would be pretty good time.

BTW, anyone else have any idea about the situation of local taxi guys not allowing self drive vehicles?

I'm travelling by self drive rentals to Tawang in April 17. Now I'm also KonfuSed @KonfuSed
I think I have confused you. There is no problem whatsoever in driving/ riding your own vehicle to Tawang. The taxi union guys were demanding that for seeing Bumla pass and Sangetser lake, the tourists should take a local taxi. But as I have mentioned earlier also, there have been some logs on Tawang since my trip where people have drove themselves to Bumla and Sangetser. So I think this was just a temporary thing.

Will update the thread as soon as this March thingy ends :)

Day 4:

We got up early and headed to the market and had some really bad puris. Must have been from the previous day. In the meantime, our vehicle for the day-a Bolero arrived and off we started towards Sangetser lake.

I had missed applying for the Bumla permit the day before and so had to be content with visiting the Sangetser lake only. Bumla will have to wait till next time.

Our first stop was at Ptso lake and also our first sighting of major snow. The weather was bright and sunny and since we were early, there were no other tourists around.

The route to Sangetser lake is dotted with a number of smaller lakes. We reached one beautiful lake called the Nakula lake.

Soon, we reached another lake name heart-shaped lake and the view from the top was beautiful.

The road condition expectedly was bad and I was thankful I didn’t subject my poor alto to the torture.

As we moved on, the snow cove began to thicken. It’s quite amazing that 3 days of driving had brought us from the sweltering heat of our home city, Guwahati to the snowy heaven we were in.

All along the way, we could see old army bunkers abandoned since the Chinese aggression. I can’t imagine the hardships our soldiers must have gone through (and still do) during that time. We also saw tree trunks which had been chopped off by the Chinese, apparently with some chemicals so that the land would remain barren. That last bit of info came from our driver for the day.

We soon reached a Y junction-the left leading to Sangetser Lake and the right towards Bumla. We had some steaming momos at the army run canteen there and started towards the lake.

The scenery changes after this point, the snow cover lessens and the landscape looks barren and forbidding. The driver informed us that during extreme weather, a number of accidents happen on this road.

We soon had our first sighting of the famous Sangetser lake. We could see dead trees jutting out of the lake.

The army has constructed beautiful facilities near the lake. An army guest house straight out of picture-perfect post cards is also there.

Some really burly yaks were grazing around. My wife challenged me to go and touch one really mean looking one which I happily declined hehe.

We spent nearly two hours at this beautiful place.

Time for some pictures:

Just beautiful @Gunin . I was waiting for these beautiful lake and snowy white pictures. I'm glad that I've chosen Tawang as place to go. Even I wish to see the snow clad mountains when I intend to travel this month.
