Sarchu to Manali drive, J&K to Himachal, (July2007)

Photo-log only.
Amongst the spectacular road journeys of the world.
This is day 2 of the 2 day drive. Latter half of the day was wet and slushy.
Time required about 8 to 9 hours.

Fantastic, did you get to see any snow fall in July?
Thanks YS.
That is the problem. We got no snowfall anywhere. But then in the first half of July I believe that is not common at all.
And Leh town was far too hot during the day.
So next year the plan is for early June or mid September!

Here's what you SHOULD have seen!!
I would have loved to, but there was the uncertainty of a first-time visit. Moreover, the other family was in a Tavera. Didn't really want to put them into any kind of trouble. So we chose the 'safest' window.
Maybe next year! :)

Boss, the road was just fine. Except for the bridge at pang tent site being down. That was a lot of water. No real places with traction issues anywhere. baralachala had awesome tarmac right till the top almost from deepak tal (patseo)!

Not quite. The road was kinda risky because of the slush in long portions. Whenever the Tavera was ahead of me, I could see it 'fishtailing' on some of the patches. There is ALWAYS a biggish risk on such roads in 2WD vehicles. I can bet the poor couple who lost their lives recently at Rohtang died only because they were in such a vehicle. I find it hard to accept that taxi drivers are so incompetent, when they do those routes on a daily basis. The blessed car must have simply gone beyond all limits of traction.

And for us, the worst was somewhere near Darcha (I think) that a bridge had broken members and buckled surface plating and no warning signs! We could not use the bridge and had to take a rather deep water crossing. That water crossing was the scariest we encountered.

And BTW, if you would please reduce the size of the photo you posted, from 960X720 to 800X600, I would not need to use the horizontal scroll bar! :)
