Scorpio VLX mHawk

i had driven the mHawk before, but then that was a short spin. this time i took it for a complete test drive and also booked it...
initially what i liked about the new engine was its refinement. it picks up from a low speed in any gear with an enthusiasm which suprises you! outright acceleration is much better than the competition.
the suspension though good is not the best, but you wont have a reason to complain. its pliant enough.
reverse sensors work well, tyretronics are good but cant comment on how accurate it is. the biggest grouse is absence of indication for the cruise control but it works well. u can increase/decrease speed or reset your original speed at the touch of a button. dint get a chance to test the auto headlights and wipers but this feature can be switched on/off as you like through 2 buttons on the central console.
the voice assist system is good enough.
in the 8 seater, you can slide the middle row seats back and forth to increase legroom but still legroom is only adequate. it was not uncomfortable for a 6 footer like me!
the A/C chills, the sound system is ok but the head unit rocks. has got a CD player with pen drive and SD card compatibility.
overall, i was very impressed...

10 lakh + for a Scorpio is tooooo much in my humble opinion. Its still rolls like a boat in rough sea, the ride isnt pliant at higher speeds, for you money you dont even get absolute essentials like roof mounted AC or electronic outside rear view mirrors, the steering wheel is too light, the quality inside isnt too great.

i would beg to differ Mr. torque. the new scorpio handles much better now, though not as good as the innova but better than the competition. but then innova is not an SUV. yes, the ride is still a little bumpy, but wont get everything in a single car. the steering of the mHawk is not too light, its good.
and i have realised one thing, HUMANS ARE DAMN GREEDY (no offence meant!)...
you are cribbing about the lack of roof mounted A/C and electronic outside rear view mirrors, but then why cant you see that mahindra is offering you features that have never been seen in this price segment. automatic headlights & wipers, cruise control, tyre pressure monitoring system, reverse sensors, audio system with CD/MP3, pen drive and SD card compatibility... which other car will offer you all these in 10.5 lakhs, on-road.
the toyota innova and safari (it's competitors) are almost a lakh more expensive, do you get even half of all these features in it??
and then we are cribbing that we cant pay 10+ lakh for the scorpio, then how do you expect mahindra to price their car competitevely?
tomorrow, if the price the scorpio at 20 lakhs with all the bells and whistles, who will buy it?

and the new mHawk engine is an absolute delight. not even the innova's D-4D can come close in terms of power delivery or refinement.

Dont even bring Innova into comparison.... apart from looks it has the Scorpio creamed in every department. A two wheel drive Scorpio isnt an SUV tooo... it is just made to look like one... whats with those rain gutter channels in a 21st centuary SUV? Its an old 1980's thingie. Besides the back is too bland and the exposed door hinges look for the worse.
Dont get me started on the ride and handling... i have taken this thingie on the greater noida expressway and it was hairy at speeds above 100 kph. The steering is still too light no matter how loud you may cry foul. The feedback is absent... i have no way to know what thee front wheels are upto and what surface I am traversing. Its dead as a dodo if I may say so.

The automatic headlight and wipers started on their own while I was test driving one... so much so for the highly sophisticated electronics. Besides to me electronically controlled rear view mirrors are a more important comfort and safety feature. I am not a lazy bum and can turn on the headlights and wipers as and when required and only when 'I' want them to.
You can get reverse system sensor fitted from any accesory shop for less than 4k's and they work as good if not better.
I can never fathom the presence of cruise control in a manual gearbox car and with traffic conditions like those in India. Besides there is absolutely no indication whatsoever on cruise control either on the dashboard or anywhwere esle. Its useless.
You can fit any stereo you may want and even a 5k's rupee sony stereo in my Palio has a USB drive reader and a remote. Even the power windows control are not there on the door pads.... its plain stupid.

A Safari 2.2 VTT Dicor EX comes for around 9.0 lakhs on roads and has all the absolute essentials covered and more. Comes with nice Alpine head unit for Stereo unlike cheap Kenwood on the Scorpio, rear and roof mounted AC for back row passengers, more powerful engine, power window control right there where they should be. A lakh more and you enter the territory of Safari VX which offers a lot more useful kit than Scorpio can ever imagine, like all leather upholstery, DVD player with head rest mounted screens for rear passengers, rear view camera when you enagage reverse, all!oy wheels and some other nifty features and still undercuts the VLX scorpio by over 50k's!
Scorpio is overpriced for sure.
As for the Scorpio the design lacks sophistication, its very average at higher speeds, rolls like a boat, the quality of insides is poor and dont get a lot for your money. Forget 10 lakh rupees, anything over 8 lakhs for a scorpio is gross... dont give me those electronic gizmo's which have the mind of their own and some which dont even work at all. Mahindra wanted the consumer to fall for the useless electronics and a glorified spec sheet and voila the marketing department should be happy, some actually have. Good luck with your car.... I spend my money wisely.

.......

I spend my money wisely.
And who, pray, decides what is 'wise'?!
In short, it boils down to the old old adage....TO EACH HIS OWN!

I, for one, wouldn't care to be esconced in leather upholstered, spacious seats in a vehicle that has suffered a 'minor niggle' and is 'temporarily' refusing to climb up to Taglang La!
But then, that is only me; hung up about mountains, 4WD, reliability and what not.
And I heartily concede that technically the best is the Innova. Strange then that few of the Taxi operators have taken to this vehicle in Ladakh. They say it deosn't cut it there! How? In what way? Search me, but that is what you see - a great dearth of Innovas. You do see some Safaris, many Scorpios and Boleros, many Sumos, some still-going-strong Qualises, but hardly any Innovas.

Strange are the ways of the Lord! Amen.

Dont even bring the styling into picture, its highly subjective. i hate the innova's styling, its looks like a dead yak to me while the scorpio is macho and trendy for me. so lets just forget that.
you are talking about safari's good music system. so as you said, even i can say, i can get a better unit fitted with better screens at half the cost from outside. mahindra offers a roof mounted A/C as an accessory for 25 grands. you are saying cruise control is useless in india, so are leather seats in safari practical? atleast i can use the cruise control on express highways. everyone who has used the safari's rear camera has cursed it. it has got a wide focal lens which just gives you an approximate idea of the distance of obstacle behind. you will realise it when you hear a crash! mahindra's sensors work better.
most importantly, the on-road price of safari 2.2 is 12,92,00/- in mumbai and definetely not 9 lakhs. the scorpio 2.2 costs 11,68,000/-. i own both, so i am giving you the exact figures.
the handling of the scorpio is better than the safari, though ride of safari is better. again quality of insides much better in scorpio.
finally, how will a manufacturer decide, which customer wants which features and what is "essential" for whom? every person has different needs, so can they manufacture a vehicle according to different demands?

i also understand that you are not a lazy bum, as u said. nobody here is. thats the reason mahindra has given you the option of switching off the auto headlights/wipers feature. its plain ur wish to turn them on.
all features present in any car can be bought as an aftermarket unit at a cheaper rate. so what we should see is which manufacturer is giving us the maximum features in a minimum price. again its upto us to decide whether we like/want those features...
and the most important thing is its engine. toyota's D-4D and tata's 2.2 VTT simply fail in front of mahindra's mHawk. whats the use of safari making 140 bhp when the scorpio with 120 bhp is better in acceleration and in-gear timings?
