Dear All,

This is Sanjeev Mhatre, based in Mumbai.

I have been travelling a lot in India by my car over many years. Recently, August 2013, with lot of help from like minded travelers and great help from BCMTouring, I, along with my wife, Jyotsna, my son Gaurav (23 years but drives well on long runs also), my nephew Shreyas and his wife Anubha did the "MOTHER OF ALL DRIVES" to Leh from Mumbai (6,357 Kms) in my TATA ARIA 4 X 4 with full success.

Now, the crave for longer challenging drives has increased.

I would now like to do self drive road trip Mumbai to Singapore and bacK. For this I need lot of information, like I got from this Forum for my Leh trip.

This will have to be the routes, road maps, permissions, most important the CARNET (passport for my car from India) etc. The list will keep on growing till I embark on the trip.

I propose to do this some time in 2015.

I request all members to share your experiences, information, however small in view of the proposed trip. I will be highly obliges for your valuable inputs.

Waiting for your responses. Have a GREAT DAY !!!!!!

Sanjeev, your plan would have to wait. As of now although land crossing from Burma to Thailand are allowed, it's only for Burmese and Thai people and to Chinese as well I guess.
However currently India to Burma land crossing is not allowed.

Overlanding from India is permitted only to Bhutan and Nepal for Indians. So its pretty much impossible as of now. Maybe things might improve in the future. I am not sure when that future is.

Border crossing at the Burmese border is allowed once a month for Indians. But it is only for a short duration. You can visit the border town and come back in a few hours. In the near future, there are talks about opening up the Stilwell road. If and when that happens, there could be a possibility of allowing tourists to cross over. Even after this happens, there is the next obstacle of crossing the Thai-Burma border. As I said in the previous post, the Thai-Burma border is open for Thais, Burmese and Chinese only. So a possibility of driving from India to Singapore in the distant future looks bleak at best.

Things are not going to change so fast!
I suggest you keep this one on the back burner and plan some other good trip.
In fact, amongst the most fascinating and difficult trips are the ones we have right here at home.
Try Nagaland, Tripura or Arunachal Pradesh right across its breadth!
There's always Sikkim and Bhutan too.
