We must hurry. There is the Living Root Bridge of Wahthyllong to be seen!
What I didn't know then was that it is a good 250 feet or more down (in altitude) along a rugged, rocky path.

These living root bridges are truly awesome!
It takes generations to 'build', or grow, them! A unique Khasi tradition, necessitated by the numerous streams that dot the landscape and need to be crossed on a daily basis for life to go on!
Once the roots have become hardy, they are lined with mud and stones.
My guess is that if were wide enough a ten ton lorry could drive on them!

The climb back from the bridge to the car was a stern reminder to me of the terrible shape I'm in!
I was winded! And that's putting it mildly.

There are hundreds of such bridges in the Khasi Hills in Meghalaya!
For them it's no big deal; but for the rest of us it is a marvel that must be seen.

The rooster seems to have got your attention well enough.
The root bridge does remind us that how entangled the life of human and nature were.
BTW, do they keep on making such bridges now also or modern construction has taken its toll on the nature ??

Anup, these bridges are built where modern machinery cannot reach! Or, it would be prohibitively expensive to take.
I'm sure these bridges are still being grown, in a hundred places where none of us will reach for many years to come yet! It is a way of life with the Khasis.
