Jul 3, 2020

The religiously significant yatra to the 18,000 feet high Shrikhand Mahadev peak in Nirmand area of this district will not be held this year in the wake of stipulations due to Covid-19.
Social distancing not possible
  • The Anni SDM said it would not be possible to conduct the yatra this year as social distancing would be hard to maintain, especially during rescue work, if needed.
  • Many trekkers suffer sickness due to high altitude and cold weather. Many pilgrims had lost their lives in the past while undertaking the strenuous trek.
The yatra is generally held from July 15 to July 30 and hundreds of pilgrims and revellers take the
32-km-long tough trek, which takes them three to five days to complete the pilgrimage. Some adventure seekers move for the yatra in the first week of July even before adequate arrangements are made to facilitate yatris. The administration, police and the health department used to make appropriate arrangements of security and medical facilities for the pilgrims and the trekkers.
Anni SDM Chet Singh said it would not be possible to conduct the yatra this year as the norms of social distancing would be hard to maintain, especially during rescue work, if need arose. Many trekkers suffer sickness due to high altitude and cold weather. Many pilgrims have also lost their lives in the past while undertaking the strenuous trek.
He said as per directions, religious congregations and functions would not be held. He added that a team was generally sent to conduct recce of the area and trekking route in the last week of June. He said the team used to carry out repair of the trek route and install drinking water pipes, but this year no such exercise had been conducted.
The journey starts from Baghipul village in Nirmand, and rescue teams and medical camps used to be established at Singhgad, Thachru and Bheemdwari. Only medically fit persons were allowed to embark on the yatra.
Hundreds of revelers and pilgrims take this tough challenge to pay obeisance to 72-foot-high lingam of Lord Shiva and witness the majestic and enchanting landscapes. The tradition of religious procession of hermits, saints and pilgrims carrying out “Charri yatra” of Goddess Ambika to the top of the peak will also not be held this year.

This was my second time trek of Shrikhand Mahadev. Last year I did this trek from 13-15 July. Here I was again trying to conquer this mountain, as I heard that this time glaciers would be found on the way and the view is just spectacular.

The Shrikhand Mahadev trek is a pilgrim trail that leads to the Shrikhand Mahadev peak, named after Lord Shiva. The key attraction of this trek is the breathtaking view of the Himalayan ranges from the Parvati valley. You see ranges of Kullu, Jorkandan and Rangrik ranges of Kinnaur and Hansbeshan and other surrounding peaks in the south east of Satluj river.

This trek can be done either from Nirmand side or Arsu side. The popular and widely travelled route is from the Nirmand – Jaon village side.To reach the base camp, you have to drive from Shimla towards Rampur and cross the Satluj river to enter Nirmand region of Kullu district and drive till Jaon Village. This trek can be done in 5 – 6 days, (i.e. Delhi to Delhi, involving 3 days of trekking).

Trek Facts

Trek Length :- 35kms One Side From Jaon Village

Altitude: 17000 ft

Trail Type: Steep incline trek going through rough glaciers covers, rocky moraine path. People with no or less high altitude trekking experience should not attempt this trek.

Rail head: Shimla is the nearest rail head to Jaon village – 170 Km. Shimla is connected with narrow gauge line with Kalka.

Road Head: Buses are available from Shimla ISBT. Take a cab/ local bus from Shimla to Rampur 130 km, then to Jaun village via Nirmand (Kullu). Finally , the last 8 km from Bagi pul to Jaun is a Puckka road.

Base Camp: Jaon Village

SHRIKHAND MAHADEV
Har Har Mahadev…️
Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra is one of the toughest pilgrimages in India and it is known for Lord Shiva in Hindu Mythology. It also makes a thrilling and adventurous trek in Himachal. It takes you amidst the lavish and beautiful setup of mighty Himalayas to the top of the Shrikhand Mahadev peak at a height of 18,570 feet above the sea level. This holy destination is situated in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. This is a 35 km Tough & Harsh track to trek and not meant for physically ill and weak hearted. The trek ascends through the alpine meadows to a 75 feet Shivlinga at 18,570 feet. The Yarta is organized by the distt Administration Kullu and managed by the Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra Trust, in the month of July for 10-12 days in the month of Sawan. Though it’s summer time, one should always be prepared to face untimely rain and even snow fall. In the peak pilgrimage time, it is very easy to find food, water and sleeping bags. Still it is advisable that you take your own sleeping bags and some of other daily need supplies with you, but at the same time try to keep your luggage very light. Do not over-pack, but make sure you carry water bottles, glucose sachets, warm clothing, rainwear, flashlights and dry fruits.

SHRIKHAND MAHADEV

There are 5 prominently known holy Kailash Peaks in the Himalayan range.
These five holy peaks are considered as the abodes of Lord Shiva and Srikhand Mahadev is one of them.
.
The 75 feet tall monolith pillar or Shivling is located on the border of Kullu and Shimla districts and is approachable from three routes:
a) Bathad in the Tirthan valley,
b) Phancha or Sarpara in the Ghanvi Khad and
c) The pilgrim route is the one that starts from Jaon or Singhad village.

In this video we will be covering the Jaon or Singhad route.
It is perhaps one of the most difficult pilgrimages in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
.
The annual pilgrim or yatra was held from 11th to 24th July in 2022. During the pilgrim the administrative authorities install camps and community kitchen called 'Langar'. So basically, there is no need to carry camping gear and food. The food in the community kitchen is free and the accommodation charges are quite economical. It is during this time when we see people of all age groups hiking all the way to the Shivling. However, it is very important to acknowledge the fact that even after all the facilities available, this pilgrim trail is equivalent to doing a moderate level trek in the high-altitude terrain of the Indian Himalayas.
