In the corner office of a telecom operator, a pensive occupant spends hours poring over spread sheets. He claims he is not losing sleep over the impending launch of Reliance Jio Infocomm, owned by Mukesh Ambani, India's richest man and the promoter of Reliance Industries, India's biggest private enterprise.

"I fear that the launch will trigger some irrational competition. But let them make the first move. If we were really losing sleep over it, we would have had to stay awake for five y ..

The brave words notwithstanding, telecom companies in India are crunching numbers of their operations. At least for now, these calculations throw up the same result — profi tability margins of all companies will come under pressure

These profitability concerns have left operators with a serious dilemma due to the launch of Jio, possibly in December 2015. Jio is likely to offer deep discounts to woo customers. The company is firming up plans to launch 4G services — faster, more effi cient than 3G — at Rs 300-500 a month — half or less than what a similar service costs in today's market — on devices priced as low as Rs 4,000, according to industry chatter. Going after Jio with similar discounts will dilute profitability marg ..

That doesn't mean they are sitting idle. Jio's main competitors Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea CellularBSE 1.28 % are actually pressing ahead aggressively with their own plans. Industry leader Bharti Airtel, which bet on 4G along with Reliance Jio in 2010, has already started offering 4G at 3G prices to upgrade as many users as it can to 4G before Jio starts. A year ago, Reliance Communications (RCom), owned by Mukesh's brother Anil, launched 3G services at 2G rates

Bharti Airtel, industry officials say, is a little more serious than Idea or Vodafone on 4G. Bharti was the first company off the block by launching 4G services nearly three years ago, with sporadic launches in a few cities, though with little success in terms of snapping up customers. Number two Vodafone India, during its recent earnings announcement, spoke for the first time about launching 4G services in some telecom zones in the second half of the year. It, however, said most of the growth i ..

Yet, the reality is that 4G will see a piecemeal deployment.

Hemant Joshi, partner at Deloitte Haskins & Sells, a consultancy, says there are plenty of issues with 4G deployment today, starting with handsets, equipment issues. "And remember 3G investments are not recovered yet." Apart from the lack of affordable — below Rs 6,000 — handsets supporting 4G, a closer look at spectrum holdings raises another issue. No operator, barring perhaps Reliance Jio, has adequate spectrum to roll out an all-India 4G network. The spectrum footprint shows Bharti can l ..

Reliance Communications comes a close second due to its possession of 5MHz of spectrum in the 800MHz band in 15 telecom zones. The company, however, faces regulatory issues. It is still awaiting permission to operate multiple technologies such as 2G, 3G and 4G on airwaves awarded earlier (Under those rules, telecom operators can operate in one chosen technology). It would set back the company by around Rs 7,000 crore for the remaining licence term if it were to go ahead with this plan across Ind ..

Vodafone, for its part, has bought 1800 MHz airwaves in five circles to unveil 4G services. "We will start finding niche 4G demands from some customer segments," said the company spokesman.

But he added 45% of its users with 3G enabled handsets were still using 2G and a minimal fraction are non-data users, indicating the immense scope of growth for 3G. (Just over 20% of Bharti Airtel's subscribers are on 3G and even lesser for RCom).

Idea Cellular says the country should expect an additional 350 million mobile users, before data truly becomes the mainstay (India has nearly 800 million mobile users, with 4-8 million being added each month).

Some Leeway

The incumbents do have some breathing space, though.

The CEO of a leading telco says Jio's December rollout isn't much of a concern, given that it will be phased and a pan-India presence is quite some time away. Jio is aiming for a pan-India presence three years from start of operations

Jio's scattered spectrum holdings across multiple bands would pose challenges for seamless delivery of high-speed data services on the go, he says, adding that voice over LTE (VoLTE) — a technology that allows wireless operators a more efficient use of their network resources, resulting in lower operational costs — had security and delivery issues, which they (read Jio) would have to contend with.

His counterpart in another company said these are early days to conclude whether Jio's launch will unleash a price war, or quality war, or simply act as a catalyst for companies to improve service, no matter the technology. "So, it's wait and watch." But history does point to a bruising tariff war. Reliance IndustriesBSE 0.19 % initially entered telecom in 2002 by buying mobile handsets and disbursing them for a down payment of Rs 500 each with a bundled plan

In all likelihood, Jio will be just disruptive with its pricing in its second coming. It plans to target a million customers a day for the first 100 days, and is confi dent that handsets supporting 4G priced below Rs 4,000 — sourced from handset makers such as Samsung, ZTE, Huawei — will be ready by December. It has also asked vendors to be ready with a 100 million devices, including wifi devices, cellphones and tablets, across price ranges, but mainly at the lower end, apart from around 10 mil ..

But affordability alone might not suffi ce. Jio would need to factor India's telecom landscape — over 100% penetration in urban areas and around 50% in rural areas. Jaideep Ghosh, an analyst with consultancy KPMG, says Jio could face difficulties replicating the success of Reliance Infocomm. In 2002, Reliance halved call rates, heralding a boom that would play an important role in shaping today's telecom market. But mobile penetration levels back then were modest. That is not the case anymore. ..

One of the executives indicated that incumbents will be monitoring Jio's beta launches — expected to start soon. "My hunch is customers won't care whether it is 3G or 4G as long as they get connected. And we need to look at our business viability." Sandeep Girotra, the India head of telecom gear maker Nokia Networks, says for now, the prevailing technology for mobile broadband will be 3G from the device and deployment ecosystem perspective. "There will be a sprinkling of 4G deployment in the net ..

That said, 4G adoption in India will eventually be far faster than 3G, mirroring global adoption patterns. The prices of 4G devices will fall faster than anyone has envisaged, even without Jio acting as a catalyst, says the executive who commented on Jio's beta launch.

A device below Rs 6,000 is the inflection point for faster 4G adoption. Currently there is one device that supports 4G around Rs 5,000 with the rest over Rs 7,000. That, needless to say, isn't an unbridgeable gap.

GETTING SET FOR 4G

Reliance Jio

PRESENCE: All India

STATUS: Possible launch in December

STRATEGY: The company said it will offer aggressive data plans — Rs 300 to Rs 500 a month, or half or less than half of the going market rate, and bundled with devices to support 4G technology. Problem is it has no 3G network to fall back on. It may run some 2G services in a few circles.

Bharti Airtel

PRESENCE: 11 telecom zones

STATUS: Has started 4G services in 296 towns. Its services are now available in Bengaluru, Pune, Nasik, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Mangaluru, Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Kapurthala, Moga, Bathinda and Patiala, among others. Further, 4G trials have been launched for existing AirtelBSE 4.29 % customers in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Mumbai.

STRAT ..

Vodafone India

PRESENCE: Five telecom zones

STATUS: It is selectively testing in a couple of these zones where it has sufficient airwaves.

STRATEGY: The company is still betting on 3G first, for which it has bigger expansion plans

Reliance Communications

PRESENCE: 20 telecom zones

STATUS: It will selectively launch 4G services across the country starting with Gujarat in November.

STRATEGY: But would need to spend Rs 7,000 crore on liberalization of spectrum that it holds since 2001, the first step towards launching 4G. It will be priced in tandem with prevailing market rates.

4G EXPLAINED

In mobile telephony, 2G is the most efficient technology for voice calls. GSM technology involves splitting each second into millisecond slices and distributing time among all callers connected to the mobile tower (signal emitting station) at that time.

However, for internet connectivity, which require data packets to be delivered, this was not very efficient. The evolution to 3G, which came in tandem with operators using internet protocol, changed ..

Today Jio has changed the game in cellular and in broadband internet also.
For broadband there are many cheap local private players.
Main impact is coming from Jio.
Jio offers 1GB data every day on Prime membership of 99 + 303 per month. Plus is 2am to 5 am you get unlimited data.
This scheme is tempting and for 1 year till March 2018 only. In 2018 may be better plans will come.
Other cellular operators are also offering 1GB per day in 350 per month till March 2018.
BSNL is giving 2 GB per day at 339 per month.
All these offers are for 4G handsets.

Broadband private players are offering 500 per month for 5MBPS speed till some gb and 2Mbps after that for unlimited use.
Such plans are changing internet market in India.

Getting 8GB 4G data and unlimited calls for Rs. 699 + taxes on Vodafone. That is enough data for me, considering I have broadband connection at home and don't have to deal with call drop issues.

New Delhi: Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Jio on Thursday announced launch of its fibre-based broadband service, offering minimum internet speed of 100 Mbps for ₹699 a month, a rate 35-45 per cent lower than rivals, as it looked to repeat the disruption caused in the telecom sector three years back.
Jio Fiber will offer free voice calling anywhere in the country, unlimited data and video conferencing, the company said in a statement.
Annual subscribers will get 4K set top box, for streaming TV channels, free while a 4K television set would be complimentary with plans with higher payouts such as 'Gold' and above.
The company announced complimentary high definition set-top box and an advance modem Jio Home Gateway, zero-latency gaming and device security of up to five devices in all the plans priced between between ₹699 to ₹8,499 per month.
"For Gaming, Device Security, Home Networking, VR Experience, Video Content services, provided by RCITPL (a platform service company) and TV Video Calling & Conferencing, subscribers need to purchase compatible devices," Jio said.

Jio is offering complementary television sets to annual subscribers of broadband plans in the range of ₹2,499 to ₹8,499. The company is also offering television set on two-year subscription of gold plan priced at ₹1,299 per month.
"The launch of Jio Fiber, with its revolutionary services is just the beginning of a new and exciting journey. As always, we will continue working hard to bring more such amazing services to your home and take Jio Fiber to the next level. I want to specially thank our 5 lakh Jio Fiber Preview users, who have contributed significantly in perfecting our product and service experience," Akash Ambani, Director, Reliance Jio Infocomm, said.
The company has announced launch of the service across 1,600 cities.

Reliance Jio, Mukesh Ambani's vehicle for re-entry into the telecom space, had three years back begun mobile services, offering free voice calling and data. That got millions hooked on to his network which started charging for internet data usages from April 1, 2017, while voice calls continue to remain free.
Jio's ₹3.5 lakh crore investment in 4G telecom services coupled with aggressive pricing had unleashed intense competition in the market that forced rivals to either fold up or merge to better compete with it.
"Currently, the average fixed-line broadband speed in India is 25 Mbps. Even in America, which is the most developed economy, it is around 90 Mbps. Jio Fiber, India's first 100 per cent all-fiber broadband service, will start from 100 Mbps and go all the way up to 1 Gbps. This will propel India to top 5 broadband nations globally," the statement said.

Jio Fiber customers subscribing to ₹699 plan will get three-month complimentary access Jio Cinema and Jio Saavn app and ₹849 plan subscriber will get three-month access to video entertainment apps. Subscriber of higher plan will get access to annual subscription of leading video entertainment apps bundled in their plans, according to the statement.
Customers opting for Jio Fiber will need to pay ₹1,000 installation charges and ₹1,500 refundable fee.
State-run BSNL tops fixedline broadband service segment with 9.05 million customers. It is followed by Bharti Airtel with 2.4 million customers, Atria Convergence Technologies 1.45 million, Reliance Jio's subsidiary Hathway Cable & Datacom 0.84 million and MTNL 0.74 million.
