A Mile With Us
Dear all,

I'm planning the spiti circuit this summer with my family. My 2 year old daughter will also be with us, so planning this in advance. I'm planning to start from Delhi around 15th June and will be driving a Renault Duster 85 ps. If Kunzum pass opens by the time I reach Losar, I will cross it and come via Manali. If not, I will return via Kaza. Therefore, I will make all the bookings until Losar only for now.

I have made the following itinerary at the moment (Assuming Kunzum opens on time):

Day 1: Delhi to Narkanda
Day 2: Narkanda to Pooh
Day 3: Pooh - Spend some time in and around Ropa - Pooh
Day 4: Pooh - Tabo (Covering Nako and Gue on the way)
Day 5: Tabo - Kaza (Covering Dhankar on the way)
Day 6: Kaza (Key, Kibber, Comic etc.)
Day 7: Kaza - Losar
Day 8: Losar - Chandertaal
Day 9: Chandertaal - Manali
Day 10: Manali - Delhi

I have not included Kalpa and Chitkul as we spent good 5 days there a couple of years back after doing Rupin Pass. Also, not including Pin valley as Bhabha pass trek is in the pipeline.

Even though I have been to this circuit before, I need suggestions/recommendations on the following:

1) Any special preparation to be made considering the baby is travelling with us?

2) Please suggest child friendly places to stay in the following locations in the month of June. Please provide the phone numbers also if possible. Budget around Rs 2000 per night for one room.

  • Pooh
  • Tabo
  • Kaza
  • Losar
  • Chandertaal/Baatal

Thanks,
GT

The itinerary looks good. Though you might not be able to cover chandertaal as even though in case Kunzum opens by that time, chances are remote that chandertaal might open immediately.

For babies, keep their food, snacks and toys in plenty. Also keep all possible medicines that the baby might need. Make a note of primary medical facilities along the route in case you need anything. Babies usually adapt well so consult a pediatrician for any baby related meds for AMS. Keep a lot of woolens as nights can get cold.

As for accommodations, they are not an issue in Tabo and Kaza. You will get homestays in Losar. Chandertaal/Bataal accommodations are not really baby friendly as they are just tents.

If in case the route via Manali opens, start very early so that water crossings are not a problem. There will be a lot of them between Batal and Gramphoo. This section is treacherous.

Thanks a lot Rohit for your inputs.

I agree with Rohit, avoid staying at Chandertal and do a day trip from Losar.

You can explore Komic, Hikkim and Langza en route to Kaza.

From Kaza, you can explore Key, Kibber, Gette, Tashigang etc..

Mytri at Tabo is good. You can book HPPWD and HPTDC elsewhere.

Final itinerary with bookings done:

Day 1: Delhi to Narkanda
Day 2: Narkanda to Kalpa
Day 3: Kalpa to Nako
Day 4: Nako to Tabo
Day 5: Tabo to Kaza
Day 6: Kaza
Day 7: Kaza to Chicham
Day 8: Chicham to Manali (subject to Kunzum pass status)
Day 9: Manali
Day 10: Manali to Delhi

The Nomad's cottage in Losar was full. But I had a discussion with owner and he convinced me that The Nomad's Cottage in Chicham is even better. I booked it. Hope night stay at this altitude will not be a problem considering we have our little one with us.

It should be fine, though to be on the safe side, you could carry an oxygen cylinder with you. Make sure it has enough oxygen for 20-30 mins. Smaller ones are useless for the most part.
