RAIN CONTINUES IN PUNJAB, HARYANA

Union territory of Chandigarh at 46.9 mm, Ambala at 11.9 mm, Karnal (10 mm), Amritsar (1.6mm), Ludhiana (60.8 mm), and Patiala (5.5 mm), received heavy rain in the last 24 hours (till 08:30 am today), a met department said.

Continuous showers triggered waterlogging in low-lying areas, creating traffic snarls in parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh.

Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh's claims of better preparation for this monsoon stand exposed as several places, including Bapu Dham colony, Atawa village, and other low-lying parts, in the industrial area remain waterlogged.

In Mohali also, several areas including 3B1, Phase 4 and 5, and Kharar remain waterlogged.

Traffic movement was also affected in some areas of Mohali and Chandigarh as also on the National Highway leading from Kharar to Chandigarh.

However, experts said, rains are expected to benefit farmers in ongoing Kharif season as plantation of such water-guzzling crop as paddy and others are on.

Meanwhile, rains eased power situation as the demand dipped sharply in the two states with minimum temperature in many parts dropping several notches below normal.

Chandigarh today recorded its minimum temperature at 22.8 degree Celsius, one degree below normal.

Among other places in Haryana, Ambala, Hisar, Karnal, and Narnaul recorded minimums at 22 degree Celsius, 25.3 degree Celsius, 23 degree Celsius, and 24.8 degree Celsius, respectively, down by up to three notches below normal.

In Punjab, the minimum of Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala settled at 24 deg C, 23.2 deg C and 23.5 deg C respectively.
