Rain Brings Respite As Delhi Waits For PM Modi's Election Victory Address

Delhi Edited by Ridhima Shukla

Light rains lashed the city after a brief dust storm which brought the temperatures down. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature hovered around 40.04 degrees Celsius in the morning today.

Updated : May 23, 2019 20:19 IST

New Delhi:

Even as Lok Sabha Elections 2019 results started trickling in and people across the country waited for PM Modi to deliver his address as the BJP headed for a victory, Delhi residents were greeted by rain and thunderstorm accompanied with lightning in the evening today.

Light rains lashed the city after a brief dust storm which brought the temperatures down. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature hovered around 40.04 degrees Celsius in the morning today.

Hailstorm was also witnessed at certain places in the city, said Skymet Weather.

On Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow 'watch' forecast, meaning 'be aware', for thunderstorm and lightning across north India.

The weather department has predicted thunderstorm and gusty winds in Delhi for tomorrow also.

Delhi residents on Twitter did not miss the opportunity to link the good weather with that of the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The NDA is ahead in 343 of the 542 seats, while the BJP lead has crossed 300.

A western disturbance and its induced cyclonic circulation is the cause of the widespread instability across northern India.

Every year, as the end of May approaches, India awaits for the much-needed monsoon respite from the scorching summer heat. Last year, monsoon crossed the Kerala border on May 29th. However, this year, the monsoon has stalled in the southeast Bay of Bengal around the Andaman Sea for last 10 days. The onset is not expected before June 6, meaning the heat is here to stay at least until the first week of June.
The Weather Channel's (TWC) forecasts for the upcoming week suggest that the temperatures across India may soar further due to hot and dry northwesterly winds. Except for the northeastern states, the western Indian Himalayan states and Kerala, the rest of the country is likely to see the mercury rise above 40°C. Maximum temperatures of 45°C or more are likely to persist over Rajasthan and inland Maharashtra. Moreover, temperatures in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh may also breach the 45°C threshold after Thursday.

Vidarbha, Marathwada, Madhya Maharashtra witness extreme heat

On Monday, Nagpur witnessed a scorching high of 46.7°C, making it the hottest city in the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that that heat wave will persist in the region and temperatures will stay above 46°C in Nagpur for the next seven days. Data from the public health department suggests that 156 people have been hospitalised due to heat stroke in Nagpur alone this year. In total, seven people have died and 440 have been hospitalised due to heat strokes across Maharashtra.
Persistent heatwave conditions in Vidarbha, Marathwada and Madhya Maharashtra are likely to continue until next week. Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal by 3.1°C to 5.0°C across these regions on Monday. Wardha and Chandrapur also recorded a maximum temperature of around 46.5°C. According to TWC Met team, maximum temperatures of 45°C or more are likely to persist over inland Maharashtra this week. As per the IMD, severe heat wave conditions are possible in the Vidarbha region on Tuesday and Wednesday.

At 47.2°C, Ramagundam in Telangana was the second hottest place on Earth on Monday, according to El Dorado Weather. Many parts of Telangana have been experiencing heatwave conditions for the last two weeks, and according to IMD data, the heatwave conditions are likely to extend till Wednesday in isolated parts of Telangana. TWC forecasts that the maximum temperature may touch 45°C in northern parts of Telangana, while in the rest of the state, the mercury may remain above 40°C.
Hyderabad recorded a maximum temperature of 42.5°C on Monday, four units above normal temperature for the season. It is expected to reach 44°C during the weekend. Due to the convergence of winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bengal Bay, evening showers are possible over the City of Pearls throughout this week. However, temperatures will remain above 42°C.
