New Delhi: Mercury fell by several notches after the rains hit various parts of northern India including Delhi on late Monday night. Rainfall was received in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Delhi.
The much-needed respite is likely to continue as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rainfall in the coming days. "Thundershower and hailstorm will hit the region in the next two days," said Director of IMD Himachal Pradesh Manmohan Singh.
While the monsoon is expected to arrive in the region around June 26, IMD says these rains area due to western disturbances over Pakistan and effects of cyclone Vayu.
After the rainfall, the maximum temperature fell by 5.1 degrees Celcius or less at many places over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Rajasthan, while minimum temperature plummetted by 3.1 to 5.0 degrees Celcius, said IMD.
According to private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather, Delhi witnessed the longest period of a heatwave this season - from June 1 to June 13.
As per the IMD, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat will also receive light rains. Further, a yellow (be aware) warning has been issued in Shimla, predicting thunderstorm with lightning and gusty winds in the hill station.
Various parts of Rajasthan received rains, bringing down mercury to a certain extent. Churu, which was the hottest place in the country earlier this month as the mercury touched the 50-degrees mark, recorded a high of 37.6 degrees Celsius on Monday.
