Weather forecast and Temperature today HIGHLIGHTS: Monsoon hit Mumbai Tuesday, covering all of Maharashtra after a rather slow-progressing stage experienced until last week. The monsoon, which generally arrives in Mumbai on June 10 every year, is behind schedule by more than two weeks, which is the longest such delay in the last ten years. Strong monsoon winds are likely to prevail between June 25 and June 28, making the further advancement swifter.

Up North, mercury in the national capital is likely to drop owing to light rainfall, easterly winds, and a western disturbance. Moisture-laden easterly winds are moving towards Delhi while western disturbance is also affecting weather activity in the hills and the northern plains. The Met Department, meanwhile, has issued fresh yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in Himachal Pradesh till Tuesday.
Meanwhile, severe rainfall deficit in Kerala is being seen as the result of the late onset of the southwest monsoon and the emergence of Cyclone Vayu in the southeast Arabian Sea before it moved northwest towards the Gujarat coast.

Monsoon brings long-awaited relief to some, millions still parched as rain fails to reach Delhi, northwestern India

International Weather

By Eric Leister,
AccuWeather senior meteorologist
June 26, 2019, 9:09:59 AM EDT

The Southwest monsoon made significant progress across India in recent days; however, a change in the weather pattern means millions of people will have to wait several weeks for the monsoon to arrive.

Rainfall expanded across much of western and central India in recent days as the monsoon made its most significant advancement of the season.

The monsoon pushed into Maharashtra, southern and eastern Madhya Pradesh and eastern Uttar Pradesh by Wednesday, but further advancement is not expected this week as hot and dry air builds across northwestern India.

India 6/26

A few pre-monsoon thunderstorms developed across northwestern India over the weekend. While the rainfall and relief from intense heat were badly needed, the storms also came at a cost as more than a dozen people were killed in Rajasthan on Sunday.

A strong thunderstorm caused a pandaal (tent) to collapse in Barmer, Rajasthan. According to India Today, 14 people were killed and another 50 were injured.

These isolated thunderstorms will continue to occur across northwestern India into the middle of the week, offering brief heat relief, but also endangering lives and property.

India AP 6/24

Drier air will spread into the region during the second half of the week, ending any risk for rainfall and allowing heat to intensify once again.

Highs across the National Capital Region will once again eclipse 41 C (106 F) each day through at least Sunday.

Temperatures of this magnitude will elevate the risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for the elderly and children. Outdoor activities should be limited during the hottest times of the day.

Fortunately for areas that have entered the monsoon season, additional downpours are expected this week following the delayed arrival of this year's rainfall.

Mumbai may have daily downpours into this weekend, helping to erase the rainfall shortages so far this monsoon season. The rainfall will bring the risk for localized flooding and transportation delays each day.

There will also be a few chances for rainfall in Chennai this week following last week's downpours.

The city has already reached its normal rainfall for the month of June, but any additional rainfall will be welcome following a prolonged drought in the area.

Before rain arrived, reservoir levels had fallen to dangerously low levels. The below images show the dramatic effects of the drought on the Puzhal Reservoir.

Despite the Southwest monsoon commencing around Chennai, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jason Nicholls projects that the season will end drier than normal with rainfall held to around 90 percent of what typically falls.

Any rainfall in the coming weeks will likely not be heavy enough to significantly improve drought conditions.

Chennai receives the majority of their yearly rainfall from October into early December as the Northeast monsoon affects the area.

While the monsoon has made significant advances in the past few days, it remains well behind where it should be for the date.

Monsoon 6/24

The significant delay in monsoon rainfall has resulted in 36 percent below-normal rainfall countrywide as of June 24.

While much of the rainfall deficit across India can be made up with several weeks of significant rainfall throughout the country, it appears likely the season will end up below normal, as predicted by AccuWeather forecasters in April.

A monsoon low may form in the northern Bay of Bengal this weekend or early next week bringing the potential for heavy rainfall to eastern India, including many locations that have received well below-normal rainfall so far this monsoon season.

Mumbai rains Live updates: IMD predicts very heavy showers in city today
mumbai | June 29, 2019 11:18 IST

Mumbai witnessed the first spell of heavy rains of this monsoon yesterday and more rains have been forecast for today. Normal lives were immensely affected as it left the city struggling with familiar monsoon woes of waterlogging, delayed trains, traffic jams and choked drains. The Met office has predicted 'extremely heavy rainfall' in Konkan region and Mumbai in the next 24 hours. At least three persons were killed and five injured in rain-related incidents on Friday. Waterlogging was reported from areas like Dadar, Wadala, Worli, Kurla, Chembur, Bandra, Andheri, Kandivili, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg and Bhandup, among others. Responding to the reports of waterlogging, the BMC said pumping out water will take time because of high tide in the Arabian Sea. The BMC appealed to Mumbaikars to avoid driving in the waterlogged areas. Stay tuned IndiaToday.in for all the live updates as more heavy showers, waterlogging and traffic snarls are expected today.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall in Konkan, Mumbai for next 4 days: IMD Pune
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) department of Pune predicted extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan and Mumbai in the next 24 hours.
Pune weather department head Mr Anupam Kashypi warned India Today about this extreme heavy rainfall.
While explaining the reason behind this very heavy rainfall over north Konkan including Mumbai, Mr Anupam Kashyapi said although upper air cyclonic circulation over Gujarat has diluted, a pressure gradient has developed over the Arabian Sea off the Konkan coast.
This has created convergence over the same area (South Gujarat and North Konkan) which will result in heavy to very heavy rainfall.
North Konkan is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from June 29 to July 2.
Mr Kashyapi informed that even after July 2, very heavy rainfall warning won't be withdrawn from Maharashtra.

Mumbai rains: Traffic, rail services hit on Day 1; 3 people killed
In the first five hours of the Mumbai rains on Friday, the weather station recorded an average rainfall of 43.23 mm in the island city, 64.14 mm in eastern suburbs and 78.21 mm in western suburbs. Road traffic flow was reportedly slow and local trains services ran behind schedule.
Suburban train services, considered Mumbai's lifeline, were running late by 10 to 15 minutes, an officer said. No major waterlogging was reported on Day 1 of the Mumbai rains, a senior BMC official said. A few buses of civic transport undertaking BEST were diverted from their regular routes.
Since the IMD has predicted "extremely heavy rainfall" in the financial capital for the next 24 hours, Mumbai, more disruption in road and rail traffic is expected on Saturday.
At least eight people were killed and five injured in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra where several parts were lashed by heavy rains on Friday.
In Mumbai, three persons were killed and five injured in rain-related incidents. A BMC official informed that at least three people died of electric shocks in Goregaon (East). Two others suffered electrocution from some live wires in the area. Three persons were injured when a portion of a wall collapsed in Dadar (East).
As rains continued to lash Mumbai, the subways at Milan in Santacruz, Dahisar, Malad and Andheri were shut as they were flooded with some vehicles stranded inside. Huge traffic snarls on both the Eastern Express Highway and Western Express Highway were reported.
